Tufts Medicine Physician Executive for the Cardiovascular Service Line in Boston, Massachusetts

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Cardiovascular Service Line Chief Physician Executive (CVSL CPE) provides clear vision and leadership promoting the strategic direction, and integration of the Cardiovascular Service Line across Tufts Medicine. They are charged with leading all activities related to the Cardiovascular patient care enterprise, while supporting the strategic imperatives of the academic mission within Tufts Medicine, to include graduate medical education and research. Specifically, at Tufts Medical Center, this entails accountability for the Divisions of Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery. In the Tufts Medicine community, the CVSL CPE will work in tandem with Lowell General Hospital and Melrose Wakefield Hospital Presidents and Chief Medical Officers to oversee and guide CVSL services, and the provision of CV care provided by the employed and independent cardiologist in these facilities. The Cardiovascular Service Line Chief Physician Executive will work collaboratively with the Cardiovascular Service Line Vice President (CVSL VP) in developing and achieving strategies and/or initiatives as set forth in the Tufts Medicine Strategic Plan. The CPE will drive continuous quality improvement at the individual Cardiovascular division level, which will result in meeting or exceeding outcomes applicable to the service line across all System hospitals. The Cardiovascular Service Line Chief Physician Executive reports directly to the TM Chief Physician Executive and the TM Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and has a dotted line reporting to the TUSM Department Chairs of Medicine and Surgery/TMC Physician/Surgeon in Chief.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

STRATEGY and FINANCIAL

  • Develops and is accountable for Cardiovascular network strategy, growth, and system integration across TM hospitals as well as the academic and community-based Cardiovascular practices. In conjunction with Cardiovascular physician leaders and the CVSL VP, works to identify areas of opportunity for growth to increase/capture market share.

  • In tandem with the CVSL VP, is responsible for the development and implementation of business plan(s) consistent with Tufts Medicine’s mission, vision, values, and goals to ensure continued growth and viability of the service line. Aligns program strategies and metrics with the Tufts Medicine Operating Plan.

  • Works collaboratively with CVSL physician leaders, CVSL VP, Directors, and administrative managers to monitor and improve efficiency, utilization, and cost effectiveness. Assists to develop budgets and helps control budget variances. Mentors’ physicians and others those who do not possess understanding of budgets and cost variances. Works to support increasing quality, while decreasing cost.

  • In tandem with the CVSL VP, recommends space, equipment, staffing, and other resources needed by the service line. Tracks and improves financial operations.

  • Develops and implements appropriate benchmarked compensation plans for all CVSL physicians. Recommends changes to compensation plans as appropriate.

  • Working closely with clinical and operational leaders across Tufts Medicine, the CVSL CPE will ensure Tufts Medicine is staying at the forefront of alternative payment models and maintaining value added relationships with industry and payor partners, and in doing so, leading the service line in the development of strategies that focus on continuous quality improvement, efficient clinical delivery, and maximizing patient value.

CLINICAL OPERATIONS and QUALITY

  • Achieves business and clinical objectives using an interdisciplinary approach with other physicians and multiple departments. Serves as a member of the team to address multifaceted issues. Effectively communicates with leadership and diverse work groups across the disciplines and subsidiaries spanning the full inpatient and outpatient continuum of care.

  • Collaborates across TM and ensures consistency and quality; assures patient safety; evaluates clinical service policies and protocols and represents the CVSL as appropriate on hospital committees. Ensures compliance with internal and external regulatory and safety requirements with Joint Commission and other accrediting agencies. Promotes continuity of care across the full continuum of care.

  • Generates enthusiasm for the Cardiovascular Services across all TM entities to ensure consistency and implementation of programs, clinical standardization, and development of TM/CVSL endorsed protocols.

  • The CVSL CPE will promote the continual assessment of health equity across the service line, and partner with their administrative leadership dyad to establish strategies and tactics that ensure equitable access for all populations and communities to cardiovascular services at Tufts Medicine.

  • Acts as liaison between physicians, staff, and TM to achieve quality care using accepted, published guidelines for best practice and measurable outcomes.

  • Participates in community health programs and serves on community boards in relationship to the service line discipline, if appropriate. Promotes continuity of care across the continuum of care

PHYSICIAN LEADERSHIP and ACADEMIC OPERATIONS

  • Develops business relationships and participates in ongoing rounding with executive leadership and other diverse work groups at every TM entity to ensure and maintain rapport.

  • Leads efforts to support new approaches to clinical research, innovation, education and patient outcomes through advancement of collaborative efforts and direct participation in the Cardiovascular Center for Research & Innovation (CVCRI) and the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI).

  • Collaborates with medical staff and other physician executives to assure all stakeholder perspectives are represented in decision-making and strategy execution.

  • Accountable to the TUSM Chairs of Medicine and Surgery for innovative support of all CVSL ACGME and non ACGME accredited training programs as well as all TUSM training programs, including addressing the needs and meeting all ACGME and LCME requirements.

  • Accountable to the TUSM Chairs of Medicine and Surgery for all academic programs and processes, including TUSM academic appointments and promotions.

  • Leads CVSL MD recruitment efforts at TMC, collaborates with employed cardiology practice leaders for MD recruitment in the community. Actively works to facilitate physician and APP retention and engagement.

  • On a regular cadence, the CVSL Chief Physician Executive will update the TM CVSL Executive Committee on current and potential partnership activities in their respective service line(s), including increased local care capabilities, coordination of patient care activities and protocol adoption.

  • Participates in development and monitoring of process improvement activities. Is engaged with CVSL physicians and physician leaders to ensure needs are being met consistently and that staff and physician satisfaction and engagement remain high.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Greater than 5 years’ experience as a physician leader, division chief or other leadership position

  • Licensure or eligible for licensure as a physician in the state of Massachusetts.

  • Board Certified at least in one cardiovascular disease specialty

  • Eligible for an academic appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level
