State of Massachusetts Chief Nursing Officer in Boston, Massachusetts

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced individual to become our Chief Nursing Officer. The CNOplans, organizes, directs and evaluates Nursing Care services and Clinical Operations for the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital patients and clients. The incumbent provides leadership and clinical direction to all nursing departments, both medical and psychiatric. This CNO is the nurse executive responsible, under CMS and Joint Commission regulations to ensure appropriate utilization and delivery of all nursing services and to carry out a high quality/cost effective nursing program that benefits both inpatient and outpatient health-care needs of our complex patient population. The CNO also provides leadership for clinical operations including Case Management, Social Work, Infection Control, and Admitting. /_Hours:_/Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30PM, Weekends Off /_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_//__/ * Collaborate with medical and psychiatric staff to assess and enhance clinical operations, serving as a liaison with leadership in both fields. * Explore and harness both internal and external resources to stay abreast of technologies, trends, regulations, and legislation that impact Nursing Practice and Clinical Operations. * Communicate the potential or actual effects of legislative and regulatory decisions on Nursing Practice and Clinical Operations. Ensure that planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing practice and patient care incorporate this understanding. * Guarantee that decision-making results in the highest quality and most cost-effective services. * Evaluate staffing needs and make adjustments based on patient acuity, census, and staff availability. * Act as a support to managers and staff in mitigating or resolving issues. * Remain cognizant of shifts in Nursing Practice and Clinical Operations due to state and national policies. Ensure standards are developed, executed, and assessed for compliance with regulatory and advisory bodies. * Undertake specific actions to ensure that nursing care and clinical operations adhere to established standards. * Strive to enhance interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. Foster a positive perception of Nursing Services and Clinical Operations through effective engagement with patients, visitors, physicians, the community, and the public. Enhance the communication abilities of managers and staff to improve public relations awareness. * Employ the existing committee and meeting frameworks to tackle issues impacting patient care. * Utilize both verbal and written communication effectively with administration, physicians, managers, and staff to ensure a seamless flow of information and to address patient care and healthcare environment concerns. * Ensure that staff members exhibit politeness and teamwork in their daily interactions. /_/Preferred Qualifications:/_/ * Minimum of 5 years senior level management experience in a hospital/healthcare setting * Understanding the principles, practices, and techniques of supervision * Familiarity with the principles and practices of organizational behavior * Grasping the principles and practices of budgeting in relation to program management in healthcare settings * Awareness of the principles and practices of employee relations * Experience in public sector management /_About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:_/ Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients.
