Burning Man GPE- Black Hole Overnight Assistant in Black Rock City, Nevada

JOB SUMMARY

The Black Hole Overnight assistant will assist the Black Hole Ops Manager and Assistant

Manager in overseeing use and operation of the bar, common areas, and Black Hole camping, in

the overnight hours, during the event production cycle. This includes working in tandem with

the Black Hole Bar Supervisor/Black Hole Bar Lead to escalate any matters that can not be

handled at their level, troubleshooting basic camping needs, placing campers as they arrive

overnight. Being available on radio for the entire shift. The Black Hole Operation Nighttime

assistant is a night-time position.

This is a temporary, full-time, Exempt role, based in Black Rock City, Nevada running from August to

September, 2024.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT

Operations (75%)

● Proactively offer consistent communication with the Black Hole Operations Manager

and Assistant Manager about conflicts, issues with camp, unresolved problems, resolved

problems, and other information as necessary utilizing the overnight tracking log.

● Be available via Burning Man radio for all needs between the hours of midnight- 8am

● Monitor overnight needs and proactively take action when necessary to prevent

inappropriate conduct while maintaining a professional demeanor, respectful

boundaries and a positive attitude.

● Place any overnight arrivals within their designated space.

● Maintain operations log, operations map, and other tracking as assigned.

● Maintain a respectful attitude and effective interactions with all participants, Burning

Man departments and staff.

● Implement and normalize regular check-ins, conversations about personal boundaries

and situational awareness, and available resources for advice or mentorship.

● Be familiar with, understand, and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies,

protocols and behavioral standards.

● Manage the 7am check-in protocols for the “Spunkhouse '' which includes but is not

limited to handing out covid tests, ensuring negative covid results, tracking who enters

the “Spunkhouse” for the 7am sleeping shift.

Facilities Support (20%)

● Assist with load in/out of tools and materials, furniture arrangement or repair, decor,

and equipment in the Black Hole Operations Camping Pod.

● Work with Bar Supervisors and leads for any damages or broken equipment and report

to management as necessary.

● Assist in maintaining a rolling inventory and notating when any supplies for cleaning,

bathrooms, and trash collection are needed.

● Maintain the Art-Car check out process overnight which includes key collection and

tracking of vehicles.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

● Work with the team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for the Black

Hole Operations Camping Pod.

● Adjust to and implement COVID protocols as directed.

● Attend and support crew attendance to all relevant meetings.

● Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while

proactively addressing any concerns with management.

● Perform other duties as assigned.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

● Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation

related to assigned duties.

● Knowledge Sharing - Helps acculturation and education of junior staff in Burning Man and GP&E

culture and business processes.

● Training Development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in

their area of expertise, as requested by the Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

● A flexible and understanding attitude that balances the needs of people and daily

practices with care and attention; Able to help identify and provide a safe space for a wide

variety of people.

● Service-oriented and respectful communication; Able to evaluate, tailor style and

patiently respond to needs for support. Experience with using 2 way radios.

● Operates with behavioral integrity; maintains tidiness in work ethics and the work

environment, remaining calm in stressful situations and able to quickly implement de-

escalation tactics and solutions.

● Able to receive and integrate feedback into action and maintain a respectful demeanor

that leads by example; Inspires and encourages a collaborative work environment.

● Able to proactively create ease for a crowd with preventative signage and public speaking

skills; Confident to respond in an emergency.

● Experience working with volunteers with a willingness to promote strengths and respect

limitations. Ability to tactfully deescalate, reassign and redirect workflow using education,

empowerment, and delegation when appropriate or necessary.

● Effectively manages own time and supports the efforts of the team as a whole.

● Knowledge of and willingness to practice cleaning and sanitation procedures as they

apply to the Staff Camp process and protocols.

● Working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc) and Microsoft Word

and Excel.

● Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes,

high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.

● Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach,

Nevada.

PREFERRED

● It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its

culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

● Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

COMPENSATION:

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and

geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $700 per week.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

ON-PLAYA This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This

position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and

endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who

may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of

transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to

fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
