You execute the scientific affairs strategy for your respective categories and geographical area using your scientific and regulatory expertise. You advocate for Mondelēz’s regulatory and scientific positions to promote the removal of technical barriers and to enable our “Snacking Made Right” strategy. In addition, you build, maintain and leverage your established relationships with leading trade associations, government agencies and academia and guide the execution of policies and scientific and regulatory programs.

How you will contribute

You will implement the scientific affairs strategy, ensuring it is aligned with business needs and strategies, and work with cross-functional teams to anticipate business risks and opportunities. In addition, you will educate others on the implications of science affairs issues and develop plans to mitigate risks. You will influence external discussions for company priority issues, provide scientific affairs leadership with technical regulatory developments, and help with responses to challenges and crisis management. In this role, you will also provide guidance, direction and potential growth opportunities in scientific affairs that will support strategic growth initiatives and propose and implement business solutions to external regulatory changes.

What you need to know about this position:

This position leads the Scientific Affairs team for the expanded MEU region (UK, EU, Ukraine, Turkey, Eurasia) within the Global Scientific and Regulatory Affairs department for Mondelēz International. The Scientific Affairs (SA) function is responsible for the strategic development and advancement of science-based issues management to drive growth, protect the business and position Mondelez as a credible advocate in the external environment.

The individual in this position will lead a team of 4-5 colleagues based in various countries across the MEU region to proactively manage scientific, regulatory and nutrition issues . This includes anticipating potential threats, risks, opportunties and emerging issues and scanning the horizon for future issues. The leader and team members engage actively in trade association and scientific organizations to influence scientific and regulatory direction and decisions and to drive the Mondelez agenda. The person in this role must be able to influence external dialogue for priority issues in pursuit of practical approaches and solutions. Delivery of globally relevant risk assessments and facilitation of issue resolution in ways which are beneficial or non-disruptive to the business is a requirement. The individual will leverage their scientific and regulatory knowledge to develop robust positions and policies for the region and theglobal company. Communication regarding new regulatory requirements and helping to support their strategic implementation with business and R&D partners is part of the scope of the role.

This role will also act as the leader of the Global Scientific Affairs Community of Practice to lead the discussion of issues and priorities, to align on common issues management and policies across Mondelez regions and to develop global influencing strategies. This position will be responsible for setting up, expanding and maintaining global collaborative networks with the objective of driving information transfer and global consistency in the scientific affairs space.

This team works collaboratively with Corporate and Government Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Food Safety, R&D, Nutrition, Wellbeing and the business for the successful identification and management of issues and mitigation strategies which protect and drive business growth. Engagement on critical issues is with senior management of the company.

The individual will need to be highly competent in food science, have an expert understanding of regulatory and scientific matters in the food area, be a strong talent developer, act as a relationship builder both internally with business partners and externally with scientific, trade and government agencies and have the ability to effectively manage issues and identify opportunities for the enterprise.

This role is a direct report to the Director of Scientific Affairs MEU.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the MEU Scientific Affairs team to proactively identify and manage scientific, regulatory and nutrition issues in a manner which avoids potential business disruption and ensures appropriate corporate compliance and advocacy. (30%)

  • Develop the appropriate relationships with external trade associations, scientific organizations and regulatory authorities to drive the MEU SA agenda.

  • Actively participate on committees and working groups where engagement, leadership and influencing is required. (30%)

  • Communicate on a regular basis with key internal stakeholders to ensure alignment of strategies, priorities and activities.

  • Drive execution of regulatory and issues management strategies in partnership with business partners. (20%)

  • Lead global Mondelez Scientific Affairs Community of Practice to facilitate technical information sharing for key issues, priority setting and management strategies with colleagues in each region and develop common ways of working (15%)

  • Develop, coach and teach SA associates to enable a talent pipeline that will secure functional execution of SA responsibilities (5%)

  • Ability to drive SA strategy and deliverables across the large and diverse expanded MEU region with both developed and developing markets.

  • Ability to effectively collaborate and influence multiple stakeholders, both internally and externally, on issues management positions and strategies to create new business opportunities while mitigating potential reputational issues.

  • Ability to lead the global Community of Practice to align on priorities, strategies, development of positions, consistency of practices and information management

  • Manage a team of 4-5 individuals

What extra ingredients you will bring:

  • Extensive Scientific /Regulatory Affairs experience primarily with a large corporation

  • Minimum of graduate degree in food science, food engineering, nutrition or similar scientific discipline

  • Strong ability to build collaborative relationships and network with industry peers to influence outcomes

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical assessments, issues management and strategy development in the scientific affairs space

  • Strong understanding of scientific, regulatory and nutrition issues in the food space and actions/interests of NGOs and governments related to these issues

  • Able to think creatively in the science/regulatory/nutrition space while remaining within regulatory boundaries

  • Strong ability to drive the scientific affairs agenda with internal business partners and external associations, organizations and governments

  • Ability to learn or have had exposure to multiple markets, including Emerging Markets, and the science, regulatory and nutrition agendas in those markets

  • Ability to use negotiation skills effectively to achieve positive scientifically-based results for the business

  • Demonstrated ability to lead an engaged team and develop talent

  • Strong communication, influencing and external presence skills
