BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Senior Design Engineer in Bengaluru, India

Job Description Summary

The Design Engineer will support both product design and engineering solutions, for Urology and Critical care medical device products. (S)he, under the mentorship of a Lead Engineer, will deliver relevant solutions to new & existing products, through design calculations and risk-assessments, by applying:

a) First principles Engineering

b) Technical analyses, Failure-Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)

c) Design Verification

The Senior Design Engineer will adopt & follow BD’s established Stage-Gate Product Development methodology, as well as Design for Manufacturing (DFM/DFA/DFSS), and relevant engineering capabilities, to deliver high quality, robust and cost-effective product designs, and will partner with BD’s cross-functional team to execute all aspects of product development. The Design Engineer will also ensure successful design-transfer into manufacturing.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Participate in design & development, throughout the continuum of development scale-up, as well as support both Life-cycle Management ( Sustaining Engineering ).

  • Coordinate in partnership with the cross-functional team ( i.e., Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, Supply Chain & Operations etc .) to deliver successful product design solutions for global markets.

  • Collaborate with molding, assembly and metrology partners to optimize product development.

  • Develop supporting technical design, verification & validation documentation; draft engineering & product/process test plans, drawings, and 3D modeling renditions.

  • Have principal ownership for design and verification deliverables for the project.

  • Develop, verify and validate test methods and prototypes.

  • Optimize: product design; material selection & qualification; product features; process design; and human-factor engineering (HFE) considerations, to champion product performance, based on the project needs.

  • Analyze the product design and utilize robust engineering principles to ensure the design is optimized to meet both product performance & business requirements.

  • Utilize established capability in design software, including product drawings & modeling, and established Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software.

  • Ensure all design considerations are integrated into applicable DFX (Design for Excellence) aspects, including manufacturability, serviceability, reliability and safety.

  • Create solutions to resolve technical issues, by applying either/both systematic problem-solving methodologies and engineering principles, such as DFSS.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed a full-time degree, in a relevant engineering field ( i.e., Mechanical, Industrial & Production Engineering or similar ).

  • Demonstrated capability in first principles engineering and established practitioner with available design software.

  • Experience implementing product changes through a structured, stage-gate development methodology is desired.

  • Five (5) years of experience, supporting product development and sustaining engineering projects.

  • Previous exposure to Six Sigma and/or Lean methodologies is desired. Candidates with prior experience in medical device product development will be preferred.

Established capability with CAD/CAE tools ( examples include - Solid Works, AUTOCAD, PRO-E, etc. ), with specialization in mold flow, structural design, CFD and thermoplastic materials domain are desired. Exposure to FEA & CFD is a plus.

  • Familiarity with risk management methodologies ( examples - EURA, FMEA, etc. ) will be an added advantage.

  • Ability to: analyze, organize & present large amounts of data in a clear and concise manner.

  • Disciplined, detailed and well-organized with experience managing documentation in a regulated environment.

  • Ability to execute multiple projects simultaneously and manage priorities.

  • Ability to work independently, and in partnership with development teams based in North America, and/or Europe, is desired.

  • Experience translating customer needs and performance expectations into viable product design characteristics will be considered a plus.
