Why this job matters

The “Telco Capabilities” unit within Digital manages the strategic IT “engine room” systems for the Consumer

unit. Telco Capabilities develop and manage the IT systems which underpin business processes like order

fulfilment and fault management. At the core of this unit are software platforms like SalesForce Vlocity, Ciena

Blue Planet but also a considerable suite of self-build applications, typically Java Spring apps running on AWS

cloud. The unit processes all the major telco products relevant to a Consumer including broadband, mobile

and TV. The role will involve leading a small technical development team working on a specific capability. The

role holder will be responsible for all aspects of the application lifecycle – e.g. requirements, design,

development, test and in-life.

What you’ll be doing

Right now, most of our applications run on Oracle databases, using Java, PLSQL and SQL. As part of our transformation, we’re building new services in Java, and Python, making our applications suitable to run in the public cloud and leveraging the power of cloud data capabilities for data reporting, analytics, and AI. We need you to come and help us make this a reality by:

• Driving automation and cloud readiness.

• Reviewing data, solving complex problems, and creating data solutions

• Inputting, understanding, and challenging engineering conclusions, and empowering your squad to be autonomous.

• Collaborating with other engineering leaders to contribute to company-wide engineering best practices and standards.

• Providing technical knowledge to consult on significant component(s) of a solution, as well as taking responsibility for the software deliverables.

• Supporting and coaching a team of high performing software engineers and driving continuous improvement across your squad.

Skills and Experiences

Essential:

1 – Hands-on Java / Spring development experience – particularly “back-end” Spring development. If you've done C# with a bit of Java we can consider this too.

2 – Tried and tested Agile test-driven-development using tools like git, Jira and unit and integration testing frameworks

3 - You are passionate about Automated testing as part of your engineering process.

4 – Good exposure across typical areas involved in application development – e.g. SQL databases, REST APIs, Microservices Architecture and GUIs

Desirable:

1 – Experience working in a UK Telco Consumer Product / Technologies domain – e.g. broadband, mobile or TV.

2 - Ideally developed applications in a cloud environment, particularly AWS.

3 – Experience in working in a virtual team with contributors working remotely, including in India.

4 – Experience with long-lived workflow – e.g. BPMN workflow engines

5 - Any exposure to leading or mentoring a development team.
