Your Opportunity

Work on-site at MDOT SHA District 1 Office for the Assistant District Engineer – Traffic. Duties include:

  • Receive lane closure permit applications by email, determine the correct MD. MOT standard, days and time of day to assign to the permit, approve the permit using the MD. SHA computer program and send it back.

  • Travel SHA District 1 area inspecting work zones for the correct use of the MD. SHA MOT standards, equipment, and the safety of the work zone.

  • Using MD. SHA computer program to grade the work zone and generate quarterly report of total inspections and average grades.

  • Review road construction plans for appropriate MOT standards.

  • Review traffic sign, and signal design plans.

  • And other traffic duties as assigned.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Performs complex engineering design tasks on assigned projects.

  • Responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating the technical aspects of assigned projects.

  • Prepares traffic control plans, signing/pavement markings, traffic signal plans, and lighting designs for various highway and roadway traffic projects.

  • Prepares construction contract documents, project proposals, plans, memorandums and reports.

  • Performs research, obtains traffic data for studies, makes calculations and conducts environmental and transportation analyses.

  • Conducts basic interpretations of drawings, codes, and other similar materials.

  • Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects.

  • Coordinates with clients, regulatory/resource agencies, and local governments.

  • Resolves technical project issues, presents reports and designs, and provides service to meet client’s goals.

  • Utilizes relevant software programs to prepare exhibits and complex working drawings.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Thorough understanding of codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.

  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.

  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite.

  • Knowledge of the Department of Transportation’s legal requirements and design procedures in relevant jurisdictions.

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting, engage in creative and critical thought, and effectively communicate ideas, design issues and solutions to others.

  • Ability to create and interpret sketches, drawings, and various exhibits.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience. More experienced individuals are encouraged to apply as the responsibilities of the position are flexible based on experience level.

Position will primarily work in an office setting; may require some field work.
