The Huang laboratory in the Biophysics Department is looking for a highly motivated Research Technologist who is enthusiastic about solving problems in signal transduction at the quantitative level. As a research technician, the successful candidate will contribute expertise in protein biochemistry to reconstitute membrane signaling reactions. If necessary, the candidate will receive training in quantitative methods. We anticipate the successful candidate will collaborate with lab members on a range of projects, with the possibility of being a lead contributor. Efforts will be recognized by the authorship in research articles. This position is well-suited for candidates with long-term dedication as well as individuals seeking higher education.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Recombinantly express and purify membrane and membrane-associated proteins and perform basic biochemical characterizations to verify the purification quality.

  • Express and purify proteins independently.

  • Reconstitute biochemical reactions on membranes using purified components and perform quantitative measurements, which can be pursued either independently or with lab members. Training in membrane manipulation and quantitative microscopy will be provided, if necessary.

  • Enthusiastically collaborate with lab members on multiple projects.

  • May assist in training lab members in protein biochemistry.

  • Document all lab experiments in a laboratory journal.

  • In addition to research projects, the research technician will help maintain laboratory equipment, reagents, and overall lab organization.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Protein expression, purification, and characterizations.

  • Lab management.

  • Must be self-motivated, responsible, and organized.

Level of Independent Decision Making

  • Project development will be regularly discussed with the supervisor.

  • The candidate is expected to make decisions independently about strategies to purify protein constructs and characterize purification quality.

  • If necessary, the lab will provide technical training on membrane manipulation and/or quantitative microscopy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

  • At least two years of wet lab experience in protein biochemistry.

  • Experience with protein mutagenesis, expression, and purification would be strongly preferred.

  • Experience with any of the following is a plus, but not required: membrane reconstitution, cell extracts, cell biology, single-molecule imaging, quantitative microscopy, and any lab management experience.
