Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Cancer Ecology Center ran by Drs. Ken Pienta, M.D. and Sarah Amend, Ph.D. is seeking a driven Research Technologist to play a role in a variety of projects ongoing in the laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to have a basic set of research laboratory skills with the interest to develop and become proficient in a large repertoire of research techniques.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Utilize standard procedures and developed laboratory protocols to run lab tests and complete measurements as assigned.

  • With direction from Dr. Pienta and/or Dr. Amend, and assistance from other lab members, set-up experiments based on defined standards, the collection of project data, analyzing and interpreting results, making conclusions based on the collected data, and designing follow-up experiments.

  • Use basic scientific knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab and/or new techniques/methods.

  • Develop new techniques or ways to use current technology in our research.

  • Gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.

  • Conduct experiments and projects that utilize animal models, both project specific animal procedures as well as assisting with maintaining the lab’s own mouse colonies. Any required training for this aspect of the job will be provided by the laboratory or through resources available at the University.

  • Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

  • Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitoring inventory of supplies, cleaning equipment, and/or ordering of research/laboratory supplies.

  • Present research findings and data at regularly occurring lab meetings.

  • Assist in writing and/or compiling data/figures for peer-review, as well as potentially present research findings and data at research conferences as directed by the laboratory investigators.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • PC related software, printers, copiers and scanners.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods.

  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.

  • Able to communicate using the spoken and written word.

  • Able to see within normal parameters and to hear within normal range.

  • Able to move about.

  • Able to lift minimum weight, 10 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience

  • Prior laboratory experience performing relevant techniques (this can include research internships or undergraduate research work done during an applicant’s undergraduate education).

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY ($43,160 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Full Time

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 A.M - 5:00 P.M
