General Motors Senior Data Governance Engineer in Austin, Texas

Job Description

Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Austin or Georgia, three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

As a Senior Data Governance Engineer, you will be part of the organization that is accountable to facilitate and influence processes and behaviors across the various data and analytics teams to ensure that GM is successful in defining and building data products as a corporate asset within the enterprise data mesh ecosystem. This role will be responsible for setting requirements and governing the hygiene of the practice execution of metadata management, data cataloguing, data lineage, and data stewardship outcomes. Additionally, this role will be expected to participate cross functionally and will be accountable to influence how GM evangelizes the data governance tools and platforms.

As a Senior Data Governance Engineer you bring a proven track record in implementing robust data management strategies. You bring 5 years of experience in implementing frameworks that enable such things like data stewardship, policy management, and regulatory compliance. Your expertise lies in spearheading cross-functional initiatives that produce such things as playbooks highlighting business processes for metadata management, data quality, data classification, data security & privacy, and access management to enhance operational efficiency and regulatory adherence. With a strong background in leading teams through data governance projects, you are comfortable with delivering and communicating change management initiatives, training content and documentation to your stakeholders.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance framework, including policies, procedures, and standards, to ensure the effective management and utilization of data assets across a cloud Data Mesh

  • Collaborate and establish policies with Data Domains to define and enforce data quality standards, data classification, access management, metadata management, and data sharing contracts across the federated data governance community

  • Work closely with IT teams to implement data governance tools and platforms that influence respective roadmaps

  • Conduct data risk assessments and develop risk mitigation strategies to address data security, privacy, and compliance requirements.

  • Execute test validations to ensure security measures are in place that protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations.

  • Measure the effectiveness of data governance initiatives using metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Provide training and support to business users, data domain data stewards, and data consumers on data governance principles, best practices, and tools.

  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in data governance, and proactively identify opportunities for improvement and innovation for cloud and on-prem data assets.

  • Facilitate data governance committees and forums and foster data domain engagement in the contribution of data governance strategies and policies for adoption across the Data Mesh

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelors degree

  • 5 years of experience implementing data governance, policies, standards and solutions

  • Knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements associated with data management and data privacy

  • Strong aptitude for learning new tools and processes relevant to analysis, governance, and reporting on complex data in a dynamic environment

  • Knowledge of business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets

  • Experience working with large databases, data verification, and data management

  • Experience creating and delivering training content to stakeholders

  • Experience with business process and modeling tools for example Visio or Lucid

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively communicate complex data governance concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve data governance issues.

  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, data stewards, business users, and senior management to drive data governance initiatives.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 7 years’ experience in enterprise organizations where analytics, data management or insights role fueled key growth; Preferred experience leading these teams for a Fortune 500 company.

  • Practitioner in all aspects of the information lifecycle management flow with 3+ years’ experience leading analytics or governance teams across a global information management ecosystem

  • Proficient with the implementation and operations of data governance tools and platforms, such as Atlan, Immuta, Ataccama, Collibra, Informatica, or similar.

  • Proficient with Databricks (Data Lakehouse, Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, Delta Share), Azure services (Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Power BI) or AWS tools (SageMaker, Glue, EMR) or GCP (Dataflow, Big Query, Cloud Run) is a plus

  • Proven experience providing a comprehensive visualization of data lineage, definitions, and usage across the enterprise to drive behavior change

  • Proficiency with one or more analytical or data integration tools such as Python, R, Tableau, and Power BI.

  • Experience with data management operations, data pipeline development, or data architecture design

  • Experience with statistical modeling, machine learning and/or deep learning techniques is a plus

  • Relevant certifications, such as Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP), Certified Data Governance Professional (CDGP), or certifications from DAMA International.
