Social Security Administration Interpreter - American Sign Language (ASL) in Atlanta, Georgia

Summary This position is located in the: Atlanta Downtown Social Security field office at : 401 W Peachtree St., Ste. 2860 Floor 28 NW., Atlanta, GA 30308 To qualify for this position, you must be proficient in American Sign Language AND meet the definition of either a "certified" or "qualified" interpreter. NOTE: This position is being filled on a full-time, permanent basis. Additional selections may be made within six months from the closing date of this announcement. Responsibilities The incumbent will serve as an interpreter for deaf or hearing-impaired employees at the Atlanta Downtown Field Office located at 401 W Peachtree St., Ste. 2860 Floor 28 NW., Atlanta, GA 30308. Duties include interpreting telephone conversations, interoffice meetings, and/or conferences, and other spoken language and/or conversations of a highly technical nature dealing with policies, procedures and laws to deaf and/or hearing-impaired individuals. The position requires the ability to grasp ideas spoken and heard only once and to express these ideas instantly, accurately, and completely, in appropriate style and with the intent of the original speaker. The subject matter may range in difficulty from interpretations of non-technical instructions to very difficult technical material including medical terminology, policies, rules, and regulations used by the Social Security Administration. When not required to perform interpreter duties, the incumbent may be assigned to provide clerical assistance to units, as needed. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must be proficient in American Sign Language AND meet the definition of either a "Certified" or "Qualified" interpreter, as detailed below. CERTIFIED INTERPRETER: Interpreter is certified by a recognized certifying organization, such as the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). QUALIFIED INTERPRETER: Interpreter has four (4) years paid professional experience within the last six (6) years. Paid professional experience is defined as providing interpretive services that included interpreting difficult technical material including medical terminology, policies, rules and regulations such as those used by the Social Security Administration, on a full-time or part-time basis in a professional capacity for the purposes of gainful employment. A qualified interpreter must demonstrate fluency in expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language, manually coded English, Pidgin Signed English and spoken English and maintain an Associate Membership in good standing with RID. Education Applicants must submit proof of RID/NAD Certification and/or Associate Membership at the time of application.
