Position Summary

Morehouse School of Medicine’s Neuroscience Institute is seeking two bioinformatics post-doctoral fellows who wish to help unravel the interplay between genomics and social determinants of health impacts on health disparities. Two NIH funded positions to work with Dr Meller and Dr Charles Searles (Emory) investigating RNA and epigenetic marks in samples obtained from a longitudinal cardiovascular risk/ health study. These positions are available immediately for at least two years.

*This position is funded by an NIH grant and the position is for two years, in the first instance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in a biology or a health science discipline, genetics, mathematics, computer science and appropriate research experience.

Experience: Excellence in research as shown by publications in quality journals.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

The ideal candidate will have some experience in genetics analysis, transcriptome analysis, Linux (bash) programming, R based analysis packages (or python) and prediction modeling. Further experience in either epidemiology, applied mathematical data analytics, or translational human health projects are also desirable.

The person will have direct day to day responsibility for running the project, which includes design, execution, and analysis of the data acquired. The person is expected to disseminate results at conferences and in journal publications. The candidate should be a team player, capable of working in a team, as well as show initiative and independence. They should be highly detail orientated and capable of efficient time management.

In addition to performing the above duties, the candidate will be expected to assist the PI in overseeing laboratory activities, supervising trainees, and writing grants and publications. The post doc will be expected to develop their own line of research with potential for future funding.

Other duties

  • Coordinates and participates in a variety of duties to assist investigators in data collection, verification, and compilation of research information related to various fields of research which may include behavioral, community-based and/or clinical research as requested.

  • May assist in protocol design.

  • Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.

  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.

  • May be responsible for demonstrating and training others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.

  • May conduct literature reviews for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.

  • May monitor the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment.
