Summary

TheChiefClinicalOfficerfor Adult Hospitals (CCO)reportsto the Executive Director of University of Michigan Medical Group and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs , and partners with the Chief Operating Officer for Adult Hospitals (COO) and the Chief Nursing Officer for Adult Hospitals (CNO) for overall performance and management of the Adult Hospitals including University Hospital, the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, and the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Pavilion.This physician will be appointed by the Executive Director of University of Michigan Medical Group and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and will have a secondary reporting relationship to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

The primary responsibility for this senior level management position is to provide clinical operational leadershiprelatedtoallclinicalprocesses,systemsandpracticesfocusedonimprovingsafety,quality, timeliness, financial stewardship and people in Adult Hospitals, including oversight (in partnership with the CNO UH/CVC) of the Adult Hospitals MPLAN Program. The CCO Adult Hospitals will coordinate these activities with the overall UMHS safety and quality priorities. The CCO Adult Hospitals will guide management of patient placement and physician leadership for patient flow and process improvement.

  • Has a direct reporting relationship to the Executive Director of University of Michigan Medical Group and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and a secondary reporting relationship to the University of Michigan Health System Chief Medical Officer.

  • ActsasliaisonwithAdult Hospitalsphysicianleaderstoidentify, resolveandappropriately communicate safety, quality and care delivery issues.

  • PartnerswiththeCOOAdult HospitalsandtheCNOAdult Hospitals,andcollaborateswiththe Department Chairs,ServiceChiefs,Administrators,and otherUMHSleadershiptoeffectivelyexecutethe UMHS and Adult Hospitals strategic priorities.

  • In partnership with the CNO Adult Hospitals, provides functional and administrative oversight of MPLAN units and collaborates with the Senior Director and Medical Director for Care ManagementinevaluatingandimprovingtheCareManagementProgram.

Fundamental responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and foster opportunities for professional growth and development for medical directors.

  • Fulfills duties assigned by the UMMG Executive Director and CMO.

  • Acts as the CMO in the absence of the UMHS CMO as requested.

  • Attends key leadership meetings for Adult Hospitals.

  • In close collaboration with the CNO Adult Hospitals and COO Adult Hospitals, guides management of patient flow, including developing systems to facilitate appropriate acceptance, improve intra-hospital transfers, adjudicate between services, and manage high occupancy for best patient-care outcomes.

Program & Clinical Management

  • Providesleadership withtheCNOAdult Hospitalsinallprogrammaticimprovementsandcapacityexpansions.

  • Resolves clinical and operational problems of assigned areas consulting with administrators, nursingleaders,servicechiefsandpatientcarestaffutilizinganinterest-basedproblem-solvingapproach.

  • In partnership with the CNO Adult Hospitals, actively leads quality and patient care initiatives and improvements that support organizational priorities.

  • In partnership with ACCO's provide direct and indirect supervision of the MPLANmedicaldirectors toaccomplishdesignatedoutcomesinpatient care, safety and quality.

  • Activelyrepresentsandleadsphysicianfocusonsafety,quality,patient experience,financialstewardship and people through:

  • Hospital operations

  • Patient flow

  • Unit-based workflows

  • Capital planning

  • Practitioner compliance with operational procedures, rules and regulations (e.g. coding, documentation)

  • IncircumstanceswhereaconsensusdecisioncannotbereachedtheChiefClinicalOfficerretains reserve powertobe the final arbiteranddecisionmaker forclinicaloperationaldecisions withinAdult Hospitals.

Financial Management

  • Providesinputonphysician workforceplanning,allocationofspace,andfiscalandmaterialresources.

  • Sharesdecision-makingandaccountabilitywithCNOAdult Hospitalsondeterminingprioritiesfor capital and operational budgets of assigned clinical/programmatic areas.

  • Participatesonplanningteamstodetermineandimplementimprovementsinhospitalfacilities, including construction or renovation of structures and purchase of major equipment.

Performance Improvement

  • Utilizesadata-basedapproachand facilitatesinnovation andcreativityinthedevelopmentof new initiatives to support ongoing performance improvement and organizational change

  • ActivelyparticipatesasamemberoftheAdult Hospitalsexecutiveteaminstrategicplanning,policy formulation,programmaticdevelopment,facilityplanning,problem-solving,qualityandcost improvement initiatives and the implementation of patient and family-centered care.

  • Activelyengagesandsupportsteambuildingandeffectiveteamworkwithindepartmentaland institutional teams.

  • Works alongside the CNO Adult Hospitals and other allied health professions across domains with management,staffandclinicians,requiringthedevelopmentofrapportandthemaintenanceof professional relationships.Internal contacts include all levels of management and staff.

  • Activelyparticipatesintrainingandseminarsrelatedtorelevantprofessionaland/orleadership development opportunities.

Required Qualifications*

Licensure/Certification:

  • Eligible for a faculty appointment in the University of Michigan Medical School

  • Active Medical Staff Member

  • Board-certified

Experience:

  • Progressively responsible experience in leadership and management of health care delivery and a history of successful execution of initiatives.

  • Progressively responsible administrative experience in programmatic strategic planning, implementation and evaluation within a complex academic medical environment.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with nursing partners, individuals and/or teams across disciplines.

  • Demonstrated skill in change management

Background Screening
