Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA).

DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste Services

HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

LOCATION: 1111 E. 56th Avenue, Anchorage, AK

Example of Duties

The Municipality of Anchorage seeks candidates for Waste Management Director to lead the Solid Waste Services Department. The Waste Management Director manages two separate municipal utilities, Solid Waste Disposal and Refuse Collection. Solid Waste Disposal is an enterprise activity which operates the Anchorage Regional Landfill, a Class 1 RCRA Subtitle D landfill, and transfer stations. Refuse Collection is an enterprise activity that provides refuse collection services for residential and commercial customers. The Director oversees daily operations, capital projects, and develops departmental budgets.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and fourteen (14) years experience in Solid

Waste Management, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

OR

Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Waste

Management, or a closely related discipline and twelve (12) years experience in Solid

Waste Management, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Waste

Management, or a closely related discipline and ten (10) years’ experience in Solid

Waste Management, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

OR

Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Waste Management,

or a closely related discipline and eight (8) years experience in Solid Waste

Management, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) inspector Certification within one (1) year of hire.
