Job Information
Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local 367, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.
DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility
HOURS OF WORK: 4-10s; Monday - Thursday / Tuesday - Friday; 6:00 am - 4:30pm
LOCATION: 325 East 94th Court
Participates in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.
Example of Duties
Under supervision, performs intermediate automotive and equipment maintenance duties. Works with the Journeyman Fleet Technicians and is assigned specific tasks, which are checked by a Journeyman Technician. Performs preventative maintenance services, and some light repairs on light and heavy duty fleet equipment, generators, pumps, and other types of equipment, makes field service calls for emergency repairs, performs written documentation of maintenance etc.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
Education
High school diploma, GED, or the equivalent, and four (4) years of experience in servicing and intermediate repairs of various types of light and/or heavy automotive vehicles, and/or stationary equipment.
OR
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and the completion of a two (2) year certified apprenticeship/technical program from an industry recognized technical institution in automotive or heavy equipment, and two (2) years of experience in servicing and intermediate repairs of various types of light and/or heavy automotive vehicles, truck, transit bus, construction, and/or stationary equipment.
License
Must have a valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL-A).

At the time of hire, have a valid State of Alaska Driver's License.
At the time of hire, have a valid State of Alaska Commercial Learner's Permit.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.
As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405(f) and (h).
As a condition of employment, the candidate selected must provide their Union Dispatch Referral Form by the time of hire.
All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference
Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
