UPMC RN - Performance Improvement, Trauma Services in Altoona, Pennsylvania

UPMC Altoona's Trauma Services is hiring a full-time Registered Nurse to serve as the Performance Improvement Coordinator! This dayshift position operates Monday through Friday.

The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator functions as a member of the UPMC Altoona Trauma / Emergency General Surgery Service staff, with responsibility for trauma education, nursing competency, ongoing review of trauma patient care, clinically based discharge screening/evaluation, and coordination of the Trauma Service PI Program to facilitate cost-effective, quality trauma care. This role supports the trauma program through review of delivery of service and identifies performance improvement opportunities. Maintains improvement data base according to Pennsylvania Trauma Foundation Regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in trauma site surveys, including patient chart review and preparation of PI information.

  • Ensure patient consultations and family concerns are addressed promptly.

  • Identify trauma system issues and assist in evaluating the effectiveness of the trauma team and program.

  • Coordinate care and discharge of trauma patients during daily trauma rounds.

  • Provide policy and procedure education to nursing staff and maintain adherence to trauma center standards.

  • Organize and oversee multidisciplinary rounds and maintain service volume logs.

  • Act as an educational resource and supervise departmental flow when needed.

  • Attend trauma-related conferences and meetings to stay updated on standards and requirements.

  • Direct trauma registrars, ensure accuracy of trauma registry data, and coordinate trauma performance improvement efforts.

  • Maintain confidentiality and participate in peer review processes to monitor provider-specific trends and outcomes.

  • Three years' experience required (five years preferred) in a Trauma accredited facility with experience in Emergency Department and/or ICU setting.

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

  • BSN

  • ATCN Certification - Or other national certification with one year of hire/transfer.

  • ACLS and PALS certifications required within one year of hire.

  • Trauma Nurse Course Completion required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
