Student positions (co-ops and interns) at Suncor are more than just a work term. You will work closely with Professional Engineers and Engineers-in-Training who will provide mentorship and guidance. You will gain the skills necessary to properly define problems, develop solutions, analyze alternatives and assess your impact on the operations. Based on your skills and experience, we will assign you to one of the following groups below:

You will use your expertise to:

Applications and Services:

  • Ensure mine management and executives receive accurate daily feedback from the mine dispatch system

  • Work with big data to identify inefficiencies in an 24hour a day operation

  • Hands-on experience with mining equipment hardware

  • Manage mining contractor and vendor relationships

  • Learn SQL coding and data modelling on the job

Short Range Planning:

  • Participate in the Zero-two year Mine Planning Window

  • Work in a group of Engineers and Geologists that create and issue the mine plan to Mine Operations

  • Export survey limits and produce ore inventory spreadsheets

  • Build and/or print weekly plan maps and design reserve polygons which are required for dispatch

  • Collaborate small scale projects such as road design or small civil designs

Development:

  • Learn and implement Suncor’s Asset Development and Execution Model (ADEM) for the development and sustainment of all projects

  • Ensure the Development stewardship is updated every month, including the spreadsheet and slide decks

  • Assist Development leads with entering/updating/exporting information as required from portfolio management database – Gensight

  • Work with project teams to assist with various aspects of project process (ADEM) and documentation

  • Support development accountabilities around the long range (10 year) capital plan and annual capital budget

  • Assist in monitoring projects (schedule, cost) in Stage’s 1,2 and 5 of ADEM

Mine Projects:

  • Assist coordinating projects through ADEM (Asset Development and Execution Management) including the creation of contractor execution plans, project support documents, contractor kick-off meetings, and ongoing project support

  • Utilize mine planning software (MineScape) to measure cuts/fills to design elevations, triangulate design surfaces, analyze survey data to measure contractor progress, import topography and aerial photography data, and occasional design work

  • Produce and distribute maps to contractors and field coordinators to detail weekly priorities, potential field hazards, haulage routes, and other important information.

  • Contribute to Stewardship reporting; including tracking and scheduling of projects using excel, logging of contractor daily and weekly reports, and tracking contractor exposure hours

Mid Range Planning:

  • Support the strategic direction of reclamation salvage and placement activities in advance of Mine Operations, civil project development, Mid-term Coke Stockpile Plan, and Mining Aggregate Plan

  • Support the stewardship, invoicing, and planning of reclamation activities in the near-term

  • Support the development of a coke stockpiling strategy for the 0 - 5 year mid-term plan and identify any infrastructure or significant capital work required for the success of future stockpiling

  • Plan annual operations and project based usage for sand and gravel for the next 5 years and identify stockpile locations and borrow sources

  • Support project integrated teams by developing maps, work packages, haul strategies, high level budgets, and execution strategies, problem definition documents, etc

  • Learn Minescape and provide technical support to the rest of the team

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Current enrolment in a formal co-op or internship program in 2nd,3rdor 4thyear Mine Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Geology at an accredited post-secondary institution, and returning to full-time studies after the work term

  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

  • Alignment with ourvaluesof: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Extraordinary computer skills with intermediate to advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel

  • Deep understanding of oil and gas production and processing

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, administration and organizational skills

  • A continuous improvement mindset and are able to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace

  • A zero-tolerance for shortcuts, and if the procedure is incorrect, you fix it

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will be based in Fort McMurray, Calgary or Fort Hills

  • This is an 8 – 12 month work term, from September 2019 – August 2020

  • Some of these positions have been identified as safety sensitive

  • Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible candidates
