The Surgical Technologist assists in the care of patients in the operating room and the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment.
The Surgical Technologist is responsible to the surgical service management team and/or professional nurse for performance on the job.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position has interactions with patients, clinical and support staff, as well as management and physicians.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES :
Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital.
Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.
Cleans and assembles specialized equipment for surgical procedures.
Orders as directed sterile and unsterile supplies for surgical cases from sterile prep.
Assists circulating nurse in setting up operating room with instruments and supplies peculiar to type of surgery.
Scrubs in prescribed manner and dons sterile gown and glove per standard.
Arranges instruments and other sterile articles in specified fashion.
Takes sponge count and needle and instrument counts with RN circulator.
Demonstrates proper draping technique.
Assists with gowning and gloving of members of the surgical team.
Demonstrates knowledge of the step-to-step progress of specific surgical procedures.
Applies the principles of aseptic technique to provide optimal patient care.
Controls the location of contaminated instruments and supplies to prevent the spread of infection.
Cleans table, cares for instruments and specimens.
Places soiled equipment on cart to be returned to sterile prep.
Assists in preparation of room for next case.
Demonstrates knowledge of the specific use of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies used for surgical procedures.
Demonstrates knowledge of proper sterilization methods.
Assists with the positioning of the patient.
Assists in patient skin preparation.
Identifies and reacts positively to emergency situations.
Assists with post-operative dressings.
Assists with the application of casts.
Familiarizes self with the medications commonly used in the surgical setting.
Checks all medication with circulator for name and expiration date.
Labels all medications on back table appropriately (syringes, cups, etc.).
Informs surgeon of the name and strength of medication to be used prior to administration.
Attends in-services and is compliant with essential education without prompting from manager.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Recognizes the importance of teamwork, consideration and cooperation.
Functions efficiently and in a professional manner in all aspects of surgical care, during both routine and special duties and procedures.
Demonstrates initiative in expanding knowledge of new surgical procedures and subjects relating to the operating room and to the surgical patient.
Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual responsibility.
Relates operating room services to the total hospital environment.
High School Diploma or its equivalent.
Current Basic CPR Certification.
Graduate of accredited surgical technology school or one year as a surgical technician.
One (1) year of experience as a surgical technician preferred.
