The Director, Medical Information & Communications is responsible for leading a highly skilled team of professionals who are experts in providing accurate, timely, balanced, and up-to-date medical and scientific information to healthcare professionals (HCPs), and customers across all Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine (JJIM) products and therapeutic areas within Johnson & Johnson IM Canada.

The Medical Information and Communications Director will take accountability for setting the Medical Communication’s team strategy, operational goals and priorities, budget management and people management ensuring the enablement of the Medical Communication capabilities for the Canadian organization in alignment with the overall Medical Affairs Strategy and roadmap.

This individual is responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations and personnel of the Medical Information and Communication Department to assure the successful achievement of the department’s vision, mission, and objectives. This position promotes and supports the Medical Information and Communications team by providing senior management, leadership, and expertise. Responsible for the development of all direct reports by supporting the development of Human Resources Planning (HRP) programs including management, development, and training to meet current and future business needs while providing an environment which encourages, values, and lives the company’s commitment to equal employment and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I).

This customer and compliance focused position ensures excellence in managing the essential services provided by medical information department including identifying data to design scientific responses intended to address HCP and patient needs. Strong Medical Information contribution to pre-launch, launch and post-launch initiatives to support brand success as well as delivering effective sales training are additional key services that the Director is responsible for.

The position is responsible for oversight and departmental standards in providing guidance on input into the development of marketing materials and scientific communication materials to support quality standards, compliance, and alignment with strategy. Also, the contribution to resolution of product related issues in the marketplace is a key responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to the Medical Communications and Medical Information teams, ensuring alignment with the overall Medical Affairs strategy.

  • Develop strategy and build processes, systems, and structure to support the delivery of Medical/Scientific Information and Medical Communication services to all customers including healthcare professionals, academics, consumers, and company personnel relating to products either in development or on the market.

  • Drive the medical information and communications activities across the TA portfolio.

  • Lead the medical information and medical communications team and play an integral role in strategy development, planning and execution of high-quality scientific and medical communications.

  • Develop strong relationships with key customers and partners (internal and external), suppliers of medical information services, vendors and experts in the field of medical communications.

  • Manage a staff that deliver medical information and medical communications services for the organization.

  • Actively contribute to the strategic direction of the Medical Information and Medical Communications team

  • Lead Medical Information Contact Centre (MICC) operation & processes.

  • Team oversight and talent development

  • Actively engage and participate in cross functional meetings, while building and maintaining strong working relationships with key partners and stakeholders across multiple sectors and functional areas.

  • Develop the competencies of direct reports by driving high performance, innovative mindsets and team. engagement while promoting a compliant culture.

  • Provide coaching and guidance to prepare and position direct reports for career advancement.

  • Recruit and hire qualified, diverse, knowledgeable, high caliber staff with a potential to develop for high performance and customer/partners focus.

  • Ensure highest standards of quality and compliance.

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders for quality oversight ensuring adherence to policies and standards. As required author policies related to medical information and communications processes and operations.

  • Provide support during internal & external audits as a subject matter expert for Med Info and Communications departmental processes and procedures.

  • Accountable for quality assurance (QA) of team. Ensure high level, robust medical information provided is accurate and consistent. Lead strategic initiatives to deliver on the departmental objectives.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in health sciences: M.D., Ph.D, or Pharm.D., MBA or equivalent business skills with 7-8 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry within medical information or related functions is required.

  • Leadership and strategic thinking skills is required.

  • Strong communication skills is required

  • 7-8 years people management experience is preferred.

  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, strategic thinking, people development, analysis, and innovation is required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills to effectively communicate scientific/medical information to healthcare professionals, consumers, and internal business partners.

  • Strong interdependent partnering ability including negotiating/influencing skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, dynamic, and professional environment.

  • Strong knowledge of Medical Information customer communications center processes within pharmaceutical industry is preferred.

  • Exhibits customer focus with sound understanding of customer management solutions and healthcare landscape.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
