Eaton Corporation Power Electronics Engineers (All Levels) - eMobility in Southfield, Michigan

Our eMobility Division is currently seeking Power Electronics Engineers to join our expanding team. These positions will be based in Southfield, MI or Tualatin, OR.

Open Positions:

  • Lead Power Electronics Engineer: Minimum of five (5) years of experience.

Position Overview:

You will work with customers, vendors, other groups within Eaton on conceptualizing power electronics and electrical circuits powering electric vehicles. This requires the understanding of firmware and hardware architectures which are flexible and extensible across a broad scope of products.

You will also participate in system-level requirements analysis and cost estimation, design reviews and other team development processes. Success will require keeping abreast of new and emerging technologies, components and materials. Along with utilization of appropriate CAD tools to design and analyze product functionality and integrity in order to facilitate rapid deployment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop common power electronics platforms for vehicle electrification including AC/DC, DC/DC converters, On Board Chargers, DC/AC, and Traction Inverters

  • Review customer requirements with references to related international standards and regulations

  • Provide product specifications and propose system architectures and converter topologies for various applications

  • Design power stage key components including power switches, gate drives, bulk caps, DC Link bus, and input & output power filters

  • Conduct all necessary analysis and simulation in supporting the proposed system architectures, converter topologies, and the design of all key components for power stages

  • Work with cross discipline functional teams for functional safety, thermal, packaging, EMC, FMEA, WCCA, DFA/DFM

  • Engage product development teams from concept to production including design proposal, multiple stages of design review, test plan, test design, and test review

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution is required.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in high voltage Power Electronics development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. with a concentration in power electronics

  • Familiar with electric vehicle standards and regulations including ISO26262 functional safety and CISPR EMC and familiar with automotive Product Development Process (PDP)

  • Direct hands on design for DC/DC, OBC, and/or inverters for industrial or aerospace or military drives, battery electric or hybrid electric vehicle systems

  • Experiences in embedded system hardware and software design

  • Proficiency in various development and simulation software including Matlab/Simulink, PLECS, SPICE, ANSYS Q3D, and Altium

  • Proficiency in electronics circuit design, schematics capture, and PCB layout

Success Criteria:

  • Ability to travel up to 10%

  • Good understanding of vehicle markets and the environmental requirements and related qualification testing required

  • Good interpersonal skills, particularly with respect to written and oral communication

  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision

  • Ability to work in a hands-on laboratory environment with common lab equipment (O-scopes, DMMs, Network and Spectrum analyzers, etc.)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution is required

  • Experience in new product development of electronics packaging

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Experience at automotive Tier I supplier launching electromechanical products

  • Experience at automotive Tier I supplier developing High Voltage products

  • Experience developing power conversion, power distribution, circuit protection, or products with energy storage (Battery Packs) in automotive or mobile applications

  • Experience packaging PCB assemblies and associated failure modes

  • Experience with thermal analysis of electrical components (PCBAs, IGBTs, Bus Bars) and having deployed designs that require active cooling by conduction, convection, or liquid cooling

  • Experience designing wire harnesses and electrical interconnects for transportation based applications

  • Experience leading programs, managing work breakdowns, and mentoring developing engineers

  • Experience with aluminum die casting design

  • Experience with injection molded plastics design

  • Experience with stamping and electrical terminal design

  • Experience utilizing Design for Six Sigma tools (Tolerance stack analysis, statistical analysis, MSAs)

  • Experience developing standard work and design guides

  • Experience deploying GD&T based drawings

  • Experience with ProE or SolidWorks CAD tools

  • Experience with mechanical design analysis using ANSYS, Solid Works Simulation, etc.

  • Local candidates that do not require relocation or visa sponsorship .

Success Criteria:

  • Ability to travel up to 10%  

  • Understanding of vehicle markets 

  • Working experience in cross-functional team organization and globally distributed engineering teams a plus 

  • Knowledge of OEM or Tier1 development process 

  • Good interpersonal skills, particularly with respect to written and oral communication 

  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision
