Functional Description:

This role supports the new Rapid Diagnostics Solutions (RDS) business unit in San Diego, California, part of the group of diagnostics businesses at Thermo Fisher Scientific. We are focused on increasing access to affordable innovations in diagnostic testing and enabling data-driven decisions. You will work with an innovative and diverse team of engineers and scientists to develop, validate, and bring to market new point-of-care, in-vitro diagnostic instruments and disposable cartridges.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, manufacture, and commercialize products that meet all design requirements, including product cost objectives, features, performance and delivery schedules

  • Collaborate in the creation of new product requirements.

  • Brainstorming of new design concepts.

  • Execution of feasibility studies.

  • Rapid prototyping of new design ideas.

  • Product design, working alongside electrical and software engineers as well as a team of scientists.

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering group to ensure high-volume manufacturability of new designs.

  • Work closely with suppliers and external contract manufacturers.

  • Create, update and maintain BOMs, part numbers, verification plans, protocols, and reports.

  • Design of assembly fixtures and jigs.

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years in the development, manufacture, and commercialization of point-of-care, in-vitro diagnostic platforms

  • 5+ years designing injection molded parts

  • Proficiency using SolidWorks

  • Knowledgeable in fabrication processes like machining, Sheet metal, molding, and ultrasonic welding.

  • Strong familiarity with electro-mechanical equipment design and development process

  • Proven ability to apply creative problem solving, root cause corrective action, and data based decision making.

  • Requires good interpersonal and teambuilding skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience working with third party suppliers and OEMs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Microfluidics experience

  • Familiarity with Design Control requirements for In-Vitro Diagnostic products

  • Experience in Risk Management

Education Requirements

BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field; High school diploma required.
