Terracon Staff Scientist in Sacramento, California
PROJECT or MID-LEVEL BIOLOGIST /SCIENTIST POSITION : Burleson Consulting Inc., A Terracon Company is seeking a motivated Biologist, ideally with a strong botany or vegetation background, with critical thinking skills and a strong work ethic to join our Sacramento office. Burleson provides CEQA/NEPA, biological consulting/management services, habitat restoration, regulatory permitting, environmental compliance monitoring, and GIS services to both the public and private sectors. The title and pay for this position are dependent on previous experience and ability to work independently. The work will be a blend of field surveys (vegetation and wildlife, including protocol-level special status species surveys), data entry and management, construction monitoring, and technical report writing. Field work will be performed often off trail, and in all weather conditions. Upon hire, the successful candidate could begin full-time work as early as August 2022.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES : Responsibilities may consist of the following:
Vegetation mapping and habitat characterization
General botanical surveys and inventories
Focused surveys and/or habitat assessments for special-status plant species
Jurisdictional delineations pursuant to federal Clean Water Act Section 404; habitat delineations in support of state Section 1600 permitting
Conducting or leading biological monitoring for construction/restoration projects.
Drafting or leading preparation of due diligence, focused surveys, habitat assessments, biological technical reports, biological sections of NEPA/CEQA documents, annual reports, restoration plans and jurisdictional delineation reports, including analyzing impacts and identifying mitigation measures.
Assisting project managers with preparation and processing of 401/404/1600 permit applications and supporting materials.
Maintaining accurate field notes and maps, project files, work logs, etc.
Providing high-quality work products on schedule and within budget.
Preparing or assisting project managers with proposals.
Attitude and demeanor compatible with collaborative team efforts and ability to professionally interact with clients and resource agency representatives.
Perform extensive fieldwork on potentially difficult terrain and during adverse weather conditions on field assignments ranging from a few days to weeks at a time.
Applicant must be available and willing to work out of town on occasion. Some weekend work may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS : The ideal candidate will be a plant enthusiast with strong field survey and writing skills. Additional preferred qualifications include:
Experience with biological resources impact analyses and mitigation identification/planning.
Experience with natural communities and vegetation mapping, plant identification (both native California plants and non-natives), and special-status plant species taxonomy and natural history
Though not required, preference will be given to those who have completed Wetland Delineator training (40-hour course and Arid West Supplement) or demonstrated experience conducting wetland delineations independently pursuant to Clean Water Act Section 404 protocols.
Strong familiarity with California wetland types and systems (freshwater and tidal), northern and central California vegetation community characterization, and experience with state and federal regulatory permitting processes, including U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Regional Water Quality Control Board, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Experience with GPS & GIS mapping software and post-processing
Attention to detail, ability to work independently and strong written and oral communication skills is essential.
Ability to conduct fieldwork in challenging terrain and weather conditions as necessary.
Candidates should have 3+ years of relevant work experience and a BS in botany, biology, natural sciences, environmental science, or other relevant discipline.
Good record keeping skills and attention to detail are mandatory.
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, ArcMap, and GPS is mandatory.
Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
PHYSICAL FITNESS : Position requires long days in the field with prolonged walking and exposure to the elements. Much of the field work is off trail on uneven terrain and through thick vegetation. Must be capable of carrying a 30-pound backpack and able to lift 50 pounds.
