Put your talents to work at Coherent where you can create and innovate enabling technologies that will push the frontiers of science and technology.Coherent’s Industrial Laser Systems Business Unit in Plymouth has an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer – Fabrication, with experience in sustaining activities in laser machine tool design, build and testing, as well as hands-on machining and fabrication experience. We are looking for a detail-oriented, hands-on engineer who will lead efforts to improve existing products and processes. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is curious, asking thoughtful questions, and follows a logical problem-solving process to resolve unknowns.


  • Provide manufacturing engineering support to laser machine tool manufacturing group

  • Participate in transferring new products from Engineering/R&D into production

  • Create and/or work with technical writer to document processes with work instructions and procedures

  • Utilize 3D CAD software such as Inventor and SolidWorks to create, update or modify mechanical designs.

  • Work closely with planning group to schedule and coordinate production activities

  • Layout, set up, operate, and make tool adjustments for various types of manual, numerically controlled, and computerized machine shop equipment from time to time.

  • Work from blueprints, process sheets, and sketches to perform small lot machining tasks, which may include the cutting and shaping of metal to precision dimensions, and reworking existing pieces.

  • Check and inspect machining operations against specified tolerances - may identify and repair minor machine malfunctions

  • Utilize manufacturing engineering and production operations functions within corporate ERP systems Agile, Oracle, Cumulus

  • Interact with the following groups/functions to facilitate the overall process of design, procurement, assembly, build, testing and shipping of industrial products: Engineering, Finance, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Logistics.

  • Drive Lean activities in the manufacturing area, for example: improving data collection, updating work instructions and developing new and better manufacturing approaches and processes

  • Arrange, organize and serve as primary contact for a small in-house machine shop


    Education and Work Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a BS/MS degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering or Operations Management

  • 3+ years of experience in concepting, design and detailing of industrial hardware - will consider other applicable experience.

  • 3+ years of experience in the role of a manual/CNC machinist in an industrial environment -will consider other applicable experience.

  • Experienced in use of:

  • All types of hand tools including drill press, cut off saw, welder, and grit blaster;

  • CNC 5 Axis Mill, CNC Turning Centers, Manual Lathe and Manual 3 Axis Mill

  • Familiarity with metrology techniques and tools

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate and coordinate with team members to complete tasks in a timely manner with attention to detail

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, industrial work instructions, processes and quality documents

  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally on occasion as required, generally 10% of time or less

  • Frequent fine manipulation requiring use of hands while performing essential functions of the job; frequent standing; frequent reaching with hands and arms

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, industrial work instructions, processes and quality documents

  • Experience working within a structured corporate Quality Control program

  • Experience in research & development and new product introduction of various products

  • Requires the ability to operate various types of industrial equipment, such as: Fork truck, Pallet jack, Hand truck

  • Experience with tasks such as ECRs, ECOs, MCOs, Product Variations, and Process Deviations in such corporate ERP system such as Agile and Oracle

  • Experience or knowledge in Lean Manufacturing concepts and 5S preferred

  • Previous laser system experience or exposure is a plus

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate and coordinate with team members to complete tasks in a timely manner with attention to detail

  • Knowledge of applicable industrial safety standards
