Job Overview:

It's an exciting time to join Leslie's as we transform and modernize our accounting function. This is a rare opportunity to execute improvement initiatives as we enhance our accounting infrastructure and processes. The Senior Accountant is responsible for the execution of corporate accounting functions in support of month and quarter end close, preparing journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts and preparing variance analysis in support of the Company’s public company reporting obligations. The scope of the role may include (I) accounting for corporate, regional and store admin; (ii) accounting for goodwill & intangibles, prepaid & other current assets, and (iii) accruals, deferred costs, loyalty and insurance programs (H&W, GL, WC). Additionally, this position is responsible for preparing various financial reporting schedules utilized in the Company's external reporting, completing internal and external audit requests as well as assisting with special projects. This individual should have a positive attitude and drive a service delivery culture focused on customer-centric process excellence. This role is cross-functional and requires collaboration and partnership with a wide variety of teams across the business. The position is based in Phoenix, Arizona and reports directly to the Director of Corporate Accounting.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and account analyses related to various corporate accounting areas, including but not limited to, the Company’s self-insured health and workers comp programs, general liability insurance, marketing activities including the loyalty program, and other G&A/Admin expenses as assigned, with appropriate internal control documentation and support.

  • Ensure compliance with company policy, U.S. GAAP and internal controls while focusing on strategies to reduce the time it takes to close the accounting period.

  • Manage activities and audits around the company 401K plan.

  • Review, investigate, and resolve accounting discrepancies and reconciling items.

  • Perform detailed variance analysis on assigned accounts to understand reasons for changes and help ensure accuracy.

  • Perform transactional and financial research and analyze internal and external issues related to assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Responsible for preparation of schedules and analysis that support significant balances and accounts.

  • Contribute recommendations and participate in improving the Company's accounting processes; assist in the improvement of internal control activities and accounting policies and procedures.

  • Create ad-hoc reports and analysis as required.

  • Work with internal clients in order to understand the activities of the business and the effect on the Company’s accounting.

  • Respond timely and accurately to internal and external audit requests.

  • Establish procedures for tasks as necessary.

  • Participate in and support company initiatives such as software implementations, process upgrades and others.

  • Document processes and cross train in other areas in order to provide support during absences.

  • Complete special projects, ad hoc reporting or other general duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required with a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in public accounting and/or corporate accounting in a public company environment.

  • CPA designation or CPA candidate preferred.

  • Strong accounting principles knowledge with the initiative to remain current on accounting changes.

  • Proficient in financial analysis and reporting of financial data.

  • Proficient with corporate accounting processes including preparing journal entries, account reconciliations and account analysis.

  • Experience with financial systems and tools (e.g., Microsoft D365, JDA, Workday Adaptive, Blackline) a plus.

  • Above average knowledge of Excel with the ability to visually interpret the logic of a complex sequence of excel formulas and update or change these as needed.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with key business partners.

  • Must have excellent work habits, including a commitment to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially during period close and reporting cycles.

  • High ethical standards and the ability to maintain confidential information.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure while meeting multiple deadlines.
