Omaha Public Power District Senior Energy Risk Analyst in Omaha, Nebraska

Summary:

The Senior Energy Risk Analyst is responsible for identifying, assessing and supporting mitigation of risk across the portfolio of OPPD’s exposure. In this role, the individual will establish risk management procedures and processes to ensure adherence to policies and will identify expected shortfalls due to market movements. This position models the company’s position for Energy and Fuel Commodities with emphasis on risk, monitors and reports performance to support trading and hedging operations, and performs related analytical functions as needed. This position will work collaboratively with other functional areas and train other analysts. This role contributes directly and indirectly to OPPD’s mission that is the net impact of risk management to providing affordable, reliable and environmentally sensitive energy services to our customer-owners, with stamina for change.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Develop and manage quantitative and qualitative tools for risk management.

  • Develop quantitative models to solve business problems related to the economics of power generation and fuel commodities supply.

  • Work with other subject matter experts on the implementation of new tools/models that improve net effect of risk assessment into the overall position.

  • Ensure and safeguard the input and output’s quality across all used platforms, tools and models for Middle Office.

  • Monitor, measure and analyze the risks within the energy and fuel commodities position.

  • Conduct market analysis to identify and assess risk via a deep understanding of fundamentals and technical signals in the energy and fuel commodities markets.

  • Estimate the potential financial consequences based on changing market dynamics using industry standard metrics (e.g. VaR) and/or other stochastics.

  • Monitor and analyze the company's performance in organized markets especially Southwest Power Pool (SPP) market; identify problems and drive solutions.

  • Provide analytical support with the premise of turning data into market intelligence and useful information that is key to decision making specific to risk management.

  • Deploy effectively and efficiently the knowledge of market liquidity and volatility, pricing, physical trading, hedging strategies and origination marketing to enrich the analytics for Middle Office.

  • Lead and establish standard ways (e.g. stationary data views) to share the analytics with pertinent functional areas while maintaining flexibility for quick response to unplanned events, risk management data requests and projects.

  • Contribute to the composition of risk mitigation strategies using empirical data, backcasting, and what if scenarios; and preserve objectivity and professional neutrality during decision making phases.

  • Responsible for assuring compliance to internal and external guidelines (e.g. Risk Policy/Organized Market -SPP’s- firm deadlines related to Middle Office function); and report out risk findings around the overall position.

  • Oversee adherence to policies and procedures starting with the Risk Policy to include any outside mandates whether it is from the organized market and/or other governing entities.

  • Prepare, review, and present risk reports and related analytics to different audiences with respect to various time frequencies.

  • Manage complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff; and attend to other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with focus in economics, accounting, engineering, finance or related area.

  • Minimum of 3 years utility power & fuel commodities (coal, natural gas, ULSD and propane) experience.

  • Experience working independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office with skills to create, maintain, validate and communicate outputs.

  • Ability to articulate and present complex concepts, issues and solutions pertinent to risk management.

    Desired:

  • Background in organized energy and fuels markets: SPP, PRB, Midcontinent Nat Gas and liquids (preferred).

  • Proficient with a programming language and experience building dashboards: Python and Tableau (preferred)

  • Understanding of energy markets and operations, regulatory knowledge and experience, with leadership skills.

  • MBA or other relevant advanced degree or certification (ERP, FRM or CFA)
