We are currently recruiting for an Executive Director, Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health, reporting into Mary-Ann Etiebet, AVP, Health Equity & Lead, Merck for Mothers. Social determinants of health play a critical role in the health disparities found across our priority therapeutic areas and therefore represent a potential barrier to the success of our business and the impact of our medicines and vaccines. This is an opportunity to embed a health equity mindset and social determinants of health framework across the enterprise to support an equitable healthcare ecosystem now and in the future.

We are also strengthening our own global, regional, and country capabilities across the enterprise in this area. With the ongoing pandemic and the spotlight it put on inequity within and outside of the healthcare ecosystem, this role represents an important for our company to listen, learn, and lead, as we need to build trust with communities in-order to have a seat at the table to co-create solutions with them. This role will lead on collaborating across the enterprise to develop and lead execution on a unified social determinants of health strategy to addressing health disparities that is supportive of business priorities and positions our Company as a thought leader. They will be responsible for leveraging the expertise and programs underway, while pursuing new approaches that improve access to our medicines and vaccines and ultimately improve individual and population health outcomes and diverse patient populations and in inclusive markets. This will include bringing together experts from across the organization to leverage data-driven insights, digital solutions, and external partnerships to understand the drivers of health disparities and support tailored, culturally-relevant, and equitable solutions.

Responsibilities for this role will include:

  • Lead and develop team of two director level direct reports as well as engage and mange colleagues across the enterprise in cross-functional matrix teams to create an overarching SDOH strategyin support of health equity aligned to key therapeutics areas (e.g. Oncology, Vaccines/Infectious Diseases) and pipeline assets.

  • Translate the strategy into an actionable plan with key deliverables and led execution against success metrics to track progress.

  • Identify business unit unmet needs, SDoH trends and patterns that impact patient access and health outcomes through in-depth analyses, business insight and intelligence.

  • Provide strategic counsel to support the creation and implementation of ethical, agile, sustainable, and scalable health equity plans, training and activities within business units.

  • Set up a clear governance process and a communications strategy internally and externally

  • Ensure future sustainability by building key capabilities within the commercial teams (franchises and markets). Inventory, align and streamline the existing, significant activities already underway across the enterprise.

  • Develop and cultivate strategic collaborations with key external partners (including corporations, associations, foundations, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and subject matter experts) to support execution of business unit health equity.

  • Develop a data strategy that enables measurement and monitoring of progress against health equity/disparities goals and use of insights/data from our competitive intelligence activities, market research, policy, medical/CORE activities to inform the business.

  • Differentiate our Company through visible and impactful coalitions/partnerships that address health equity.

  • Be an ambassador, thought leader and an advocate for the industry and our Company at key global events/meetings.

Requirements of candidate:

  • Tested, strategic leader with capacity to operate at senior-most levels of the business, while also being hands-on and team-oriented

  • Clear business acumen and credibility related to internal stakeholder engagement and influence

  • Strong networks and relationships in the public health, advocacy, impact investor, global community with ability to influence and engage

  • History of entrepreneurial and creative approach to developing new ideas that will stretch the organization and push the boundaries within the industry

  • Partnerships: Proven in launching and managing coalitions/partnerships. Experience of driving results with and through partners

  • Knowledge of key therapeutic areas and the needs of the commercial organization as it relates to addressing health equity / health disparities

  • An understanding of both the business-to-business and consumer-facing environment and the importance of consumer sentiment

  • Analytical mindset and digital experience would be preferred as big data analytics and use of digital platforms key for impact

  • Demonstrated abilities as a go-to leader and thought partner for peers within the business and senior executives and a thought leader for external stakeholders

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, public speaking experience and the ability to act as an ambassador of the company

  • Collaborative approach to influence, navigate and work with global teams towards a united goal

Education Requirement:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Advanced degree preferred (MA/MS/MBA/MPH).

  • Doctoral degree in a health sciences related field desirable (PhD/PharmD/MD).

Required:

  • 10+ years relevant professional experience required in a multi-disciplinary, US/global, healthcare environment. Pharmaceutical industry experience preferred.

  • Experience working with external organizations (including corporations, associations, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions) relevant to health equity and US healthcare.

  • Preferred: Policy experience; Data, data analytics and digital experience; Commercial and marketing experience
