Northwestern State University seeks qualified applicants for the position of Associate Director of Bands / Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor of Music.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Director of Bands in administrating a large comprehensive university band program to promote heightened student experiences and recruit for the program, department, and university. The candidate’s primary responsibilities will be to work cooperatively with the Director of Bands and serve as the instructor of the Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band and Purple Haze Basketball Pep Band. Specific duties include participating in the creative design process, drill design, student leadership development, and other administrative responsibilities associated with the ensembles and their activities. Other teaching responsibilities may include instrumental conducting classes for undergraduate music majors, conducting one of four concert bands in the spring semester, courses related to music teacher preparation, and other courses to support the needs of the department. All music faculty are expected to engage in departmental and university service and participate in fostering a collegial and professional atmosphere for students, staff, and faculty colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum degree—Masters required, doctorate preferred;

  • Evidence of successful teaching experience at high school and/or the college level with marching bands and concert bands.

Other:

  • Shall be credentialed and in good standing by relative credentialing agencies, if appropriate

  • Shall be qualified to teach in field of study

  • Shall be effective in teaching the assigned subject material

  • Shall meet the required standards defined by the University

  • Shall be proficient in curriculum development, instruction, evaluation, and academic counseling

  • Shall have a minimum of 5 years’ experience or equivalent in the practice of area of study, or as required by accreditation agencies

  • Shall hold a minimum of a masters degree in music related field

Job Concepts

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching

  • Direct all aspects of the athletic bands, including the Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band and Purple Haze Basketball Pep Band

  • Conduct the Wind Ensemble in the Spring

  • Assist the Director of Bands in fostering an environment and culture that inspires students to grow and supports the educational focus and institutional objectives of the band program and university

  • Actively recruit prospective students through a variety of activities and initiatives on and off campus; active involvement with outreach efforts to public school band programs throughout the region

  • Coordinate and lead efforts for successful athletic band recruiting events:

  • Young Performers Day

  • Classic on the Cane Marching Festival

  • Assist with band area scholarship auditions, contracts, renewals, etc.

  • Work with the Director of Bands to coordinate performances, tours, and programming, for all related band activities

  • Faculty advisor to either Kappa Kappa Psi (KKY) or Tau Beta Sigma (TBS) band service organizations

  • Maintain and update the athletic band program’s presence and information on the departmental website

  • Assist the Director of Bands in the upkeep and oversight of program inventories

  • Athletic band instrument inventory

  • Marching uniforms

  • Coordinate and supervise students and staff for the annual Summer Music Camps

  • Attend and collaborate in band staff meetings and maintain open and collaborative communication with colleagues

  • Attend campus-wide meetings representing the band staff as requested by the Director of Bands

  • Actively participate and represent NSU, CAPA, the Department of Music, and the band program at state, regional, and national conventions as needed

  • Participate in departmental faculty meetings and serve on all appropriate programs and committees in the Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts and Department of Music

  • Serve as a Graduate Faculty Member and chair/serve as committee member of graduate student committees and guide graduate research as requested
