PIPE FITTER C

DEPARTMENT:WATER SALARY:$25.00 per hour HOURS:7:00am to 3:30pm

DEFINITION The Pipefitter C will perform general installation, maintenance and/or repair of fire hydrants, water taps, valves, water mains and water service lines in the streets and to the property lines. Employee must make sidewalk and street repairs. Employee must use good judgment and be able to solve problems in the field. Employee will report to Crew Leader, and will take direction from Crew Leader, Working Distribution Foreman, Distribution System Supervisor and/or the Water Division Manager.

  19. Spud bar
  20. Valve key
  21. Variety of hydraulic tools
  22. Vehicles (van, pickup or car) and trailers

Must be able to use safety equipment listed below when climatic or work conditions prevail:

  1. Clothing (outside winter)
  2. Ear Protection
  3. Hard hat
  4. Rain boots
  5. Rain gear (parka and leggings)
  6. Safety boots (must meet ANSI C-75 with puncture protection)
  7. Safety glasses
  8. Safety color vests

JOB LOCATION Pipefitter C will perform work indoors and outdoors throughout the Mishawaka Utilities water distribution system. The majority of work is done outside on construction sites, public right of ways and public or private property. Some work may be indoors, in confined areas, near buildings under construction, in pits or vaults.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Employee must be able to handle physical activity including carrying, crouching, kneeling, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, and turning. Employee must be able to negotiate confined entry spaces, such as backwash pits and vaults. Employee must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds unassisted and 150 pounds with assistance. Must wear approved safety shoes or boots and must be able to negotiate uneven terrain.

ENVIRONMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS Employee may be exposed to conditions that could bring him or her into contact with the hepatitis virus, therefore, vaccination is offered to the employee by the Company. Employee must be able to work alone or perform duties under the supervision of the Crew Leader, Working Foreman, Water Distribution System Supervisor, and/or the Water Division Manager. Must be able to perform duties inside or outside in all weather conditions which may include rain, sleet, snow, dirt, dust, noise, extreme cold, intense heat, high humidity, and/or wind. Employee must be able to work around chemicals, corrosives, heavy machinery and moving objects. Employee must be able to work in confined entry spaces, cramped quarters, ditches, and excavated holes as well as high places. Employee must be able to walk on all terrain (wet or dry). Employee must be able to work around obstacles such as pallets, railings, storage racks and vehicles. Employee must be able to work during high pollen and mold spore count days. Employee must be able to work around all types of animals and insects. Employee must be able to use a facial respirator air mask in confined spaces.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB Employee must be able to dig trenches and holes, operate compressor and jack hammer, perform manual labor, operate water pumps and general water distribution system maintenance work. Must be able to drive trucks, pull and maintain trailers. Employee must be able to repair street and sidewalk cuts with asphalt, concrete and gravel. Employee must be able to install and repair new water mains, fittings, hydrants, service lines and valves. Employee must be able to use locating equipment to find all types of water pipes. Must be able to flush and paint hy rants. Employee must be able to make service connections and taps. Employee must be able to turn valves, which will isolate areas or shut off portions of the distribution system. Employee must be able to maintain and repair buildings and equipment. These examples do not include all the jobs which the employee may be expected to perform. Must work well with others and take directives as needed.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Employee must be able to load and unload construction materials from trucks or other vehicles. Must be able to perform basic landscaping which includes working with black. dirt, bushes, seed, sod, and trees. Must be able to take inventory, keep records and generate water flow data as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Employee must have sufficient knowledge to use equipment listed in C and perform all tasks relating to G and H. Must be willing to take adequate amount of overtime. Good physical condition and stamina. Employee will have to be able to work effectively with others.

QUALIFICATIONS 1. Must possess a High School diploma or GED 2. Must have minimum of 2080 hours work experience in ductile iron water main installation and repair in a public water system. 3. Must be able to maintain increased level of efficiency in performance in job 4. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening 5. Must adhere to the City of Mishawaka drug and alcohol-free policy 6. Must possess or obtain a valid Class A CDL driver's license within 90 days of hire.
