Responsibilities Director, Baker Tilly's Indirect Tax Center of Excellence ("COE") Baker Tilly is currently seeking a Director for its State and Local ("SALT") practice. The Director will have the opportunity to be a part of the strategic growth of the firm's Indirect Tax practice, aligning the firm's specialization in sales and use taxes, with the latest technology and automation in this specialty to best serve its clients. Located near a Baker Tilly office highly preferred. The Director will have the following responsibilities:

  • Team with Indirect Tax leadership to continuously develop, implement and manage Baker Tilly's COE and cross-border teams by overseeing the day-to-day administrative and operational functions of the team, including:

``` - Prospecting, scoping, pricing and client onboarding for all compliance engagements; - Development of training, best practices and processes; and - Minimizing firm risk.

``` - Team collaboratively across Baker Tilly's National SALT practice, ensuring all team members have a solid sense of career path, opportunity, value in what they are doing, both at the firm and team level and feel part of one team.

``` - Report to and work with the Indirect Tax Champion and team to ensure that all sales and use tax compliance engagements are leveraged and performed by the right teams, ensuring they are performed using best practices and automation at every phase of the compliance process.

``` - Have a deep, technical understanding of sales and use taxes, including expertise in nexus reviews, taxability assessments, exposure analyses and voluntary disclosure. - Serve as a coach and mentor to the team, including:

``` - Assisting in development of team member goals; - Providing timely and constructive feedback as needed; and - Initiating open and candid coaching conversations at all levels.

``` - Have a proven sales background, including: - Ability to secure new clients; - Drive additional consulting opportunities; - Maintain annuity engagements; - Achieve high ROI; and - Develop deep relationships with clients, referral sources and BT colleagues.

``` - Navigate in and out of the weeds on client engagements and the big picture as a whole, not being afraid to role sleeves up nd dive into issues for the better good of the practice.

``` - Have a strong background in Avalara and its capabilities, including its implementation, mapping and the varying products it offers to its clients.

``` - Initiate and lead open conversations with teams, clients and stakeholders to build trust. Contribute to an environment where people and technology (e.g., Alteryx, Avalara, others) thrive together to accomplish more than they could apart.

``` - Have experience in navigating data of any size, including expertise in evaluating data from varying ERP systems and other sources (e.g., Shopify, Amazon, etc.) and using technology to manipulate the data for varying purposes (e.g., compliance and consulting).

``` - Identify additional opportunities for work to be leveraged to Baker Tilly's COE and cross-board teams, including onboarding activities relative to the use of Avalara, preparation of registrations, amended returns and voluntary disclosure related activities (e.g., preparation of requests, completion of forms, preparation of spreadsheets and required tax returns).

``` - Be actively involved in team training by developing materials (e.g., courses, playbook, etc.) and acting as an instructor.

``` - Have a professional presence in speaking and in written communication.

``` - Contribute technical knowledge in area of specialism alongside Baker Tilly's Washington National Tax SALT director.

``` - Uphold the firm's code of ethics and business conduct.

Qualifications Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or other related field required; Masters or advanced degree preferred
  • CPA or JD/ LLM required/high preferred. CMI considered.
  • Ten (10) + year(s) experience in state and local tax, professional services firm experience preferred
  • 5+ year(s) of supervisory experience, mentoring and counseling associates desired
  • Ability to lead and supervise others, provide exceptional client service, demonstrate commitment to continuous learning in order to stay current regarding applicable strategies, see the "big picture" as well as the details, display appropriate ethical knowledge and commitment, and exhibit a sense of urgency and commitment to quality and the timely completion of projects.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S., without sponsorship, highly preferred

Additional Information For California, Colorado, New York, Washington and remote roles: The compensation range for this role is $186,200 to $394,670. Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to skills, experience, qualifications, and geographic location. #LI-remote
