Director of Middle Mile Transportation

The Director of Middle Mile Transportation will design, establish and run our middle mile transportation network. They are responsible for developing and ensuring the execution of the overall Middle Mile strategy, principally focused on handling operations across a diverse carrier base, including transportation operations, outbound quality, developing network strategies and building strong relationships with fulfillment centers and carrier partners across all of our service areas.

You will work with our Fulfillment, Supply Chain, Procurement, and Fleet teams across all verticals to build customized logistics solutions, drive process improvement, standardize procedures and execute strategic plans in support of anticipated substantial growth. Applying a highly analytical, resourceful, customer-focused, and team-oriented approach, the Director, Middle Mile drives results through their teams, executing and fulfilling plans autonomously, meeting time and budget objectives.

This role reports to VP of Fleet and Middle Mile Operations. This job will require strong communication and project management skills while working independently in a fast-paced, and often ambiguous, work environment. Passion and drive for customer service is a must. The Director, Middle Mile Operations is responsible for maintaining and promoting the company culture.

Key Result Areas

  • Responsible for designing, establishing, and operating the company’s Middle Mile network

  • Lead the Middle Mile organization to achieve all critical organizational objectives

  • Ensure transportation capability development to include defining, crafting, and developing scalable capabilities

  • Accountable for defining and delivering operational excellence to include, but not limited to establishing, tracking and analyzing data in order to optimize operational results

  • Ensures accountability for the performance of middle mile carriers across various contract structures and that results meet or exceed established standards

  • Directly lead a diverse and dynamic team with direct accountability for safety, operations functions, middle mile carrier performance, cost, and compliance

  • Drive the optimal carrier mix and operating structure to support network growth and seasonal volume fluctuations

  • Stay abreast of market conditions for all aspects of the truckload industry developing and executing strategies to flow product effectively and efficiently

  • Translating technical concepts and customer needs into supply chain requirements and operational execution

  • Collaborate across teams including to identify areas of opportunity and act quickly to exceed customer experience expectations

  • Design long-term strategies and capabilities to promote disruptive, profitable innovation, increase capacity capabilities across the middle mile network, identify and realize incremental profitability

  • Understand market direction and trends to set priorities in collaboration with key partners, using benchmarking across industry and internal standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Operations, or a related field

  • 7+ years’ experience in transportation logistics – A recognized expert in the field

  • Transportation experience that includes fleet management, multi model carriers, carrier engagement, carrier performance management, small parcel, yard spotting operations, and truckload operations all at a leadership level and within a multi-FC environment

  • Excellent leadership skills including sponsoring/leading projects with a broad scope, cross functional nature, and an impact outside own department while promoting teamwork between departments

  • Excellent communication skills (with staff, peers, and levels above) and ability to develop rapport with other functional leaders inside and outside area if control to influence decision making

  • Ability to do analysis of tradeoffs between business objectives - ability to think systemically

  • Requires ability to actively embrace and manage change, challenge the status-quo and make recommendations for improvements

  • Extensive experience supervising, coaching, and developing others in transportation, fulfillment center, and outbound dock environment

  • Tech-savvy, with deep start up experience and an affinity for working in a dynamic environment

  • Proven ability of driving results through both self and team leadership

This is a remote location or based in the Miami area
