Sanofi Group Process Development Professional - Vaccines in Meriden, Connecticut


The Upstream Process Development Group, as a part of Process Development, has responsibilities to support the development and continuous improvement of bioprocess production for manufacturing Flublock influenza vaccine. It encompasses the development of production processes (Batch and Fed-Batch) for seasonal strain changes, evaluation and improvements of process parameters. The Upstream group provides also support to other departments in the organization.


Primary responsibility will to assist Scientists in executing bioprocess operations in Cell Culture/Upstream. Duties will be day-to-day operations of cell cultures/upstream activities including cleaning, sterilization and preparation of bioreactors, shake flasks and other upstream equipment. Secondary responsibilities will be updating and maintaining the upstream inventory and providing support during the scheduled operations. Duties will include sample preparation from shake flasks and bioreactors, cell counting, harvest of bioreactor cultures, aliquot of growth media, assist in analytical techniques (Western blot, SDS-PAGE, SRID, etc). Tertiary responsibilities will be maintaining upstream facility and equipment. Duties will be to conduct routine sanitization tasks to maintain bioreactor room and perform preventive maintenance of the 2L- and 10L-bioreactors including disassembly/assembly of bioreactors, changing the O-ring and tubing, inspecting the DO probe, maintaining spare part of bioreactors, etc.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Responsible for completing paperwork for each task, cleaning procedures, aseptic processing techniques

  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance of bioreactors and other upstream equipment as needed

  • Wash glassware and USP process equipment

  • Assemble, clean, and sterilize bioreactor parts and other upstream equipment

  • Aliquot of growth media and maintain inoculums in shake flasks using aseptic techniques

  • Prepare solutions for upstream activities

  • Sampling bioreactors and culture flasks and preparation of samples for analytical testing

  • Expansion of viral stocks in shake flasks

  • Maintains a good relationship with co-workers

  • Ability to communicate with co-workers and to present upstream data on a regularly basis

  • Experience with aseptic technique and cell culture is a plus

  • Other duties are assigned


  • Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry AND

  • 0-5 years industry experience


  • Master of Science Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry AND

  • 2-5 years experience either in industry or academia


  • Experience in cell culture procedures and associated aseptic techniques

  • Experience with bioreactor operations and other cell culture equipment

  • Experience working in a lab, General laboratory skills


  • Detail-oriented and ability to prioritize assignments

  • English fluent, both written and spoken

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Excel and Word to perform tasks
