VMware Senior Backend Engineer - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Madrid, Spain

Are you a skilled Software Engineer with experience in Cloud Computing, automation and Ruby? Are you looking for new technical challenges? At VMware, we are looking for a seasoned Sr Backend Engineer to focus on some of the core mechanisms of our build-test-release pipeline to deliver solutions, used by millions of people, through Cloud Providers like Amazon, Google, VMware or Microsoft among others.

You will play an important role within the Bitnami Public Services Engineering R&D team, part of the Modern Applications Platform group. Also, due to the nature of the projects the team is accountable for, you will have the chance to collaborate with Engineers from many teams around the Globe, being in touch with some of the most cutting-edge Cloud-based technologies. In that sense, your new team will help you to learn everything you need on the Backend side.

Some of our core technologies are Ruby, Jenkins and Kubernetes among others. If you don’t know any of these technologies, you will develop further knowledge and experiences with these. For us, it is more important a person that knows how to integrate solutions and develop clean code than the tools and specific languages.

You will build and maintain to automate the proper delivery of our solutions to the Cloud Marketplaces, as well as improving parts of our build pipeline. You will also participate in projects to simplify complex processes, aiming at efficiency and low maintenance. Testing is also important for us, so you will spend time adding and improving tests. In our day to day work as a team you will have the opportunity to learn from other peers as well as mentor more junior engineers. We enjoy learning from one another and discussing designs.

As a senior engineer you will be expected to look ahead to collaborate with the team in the search towards higher efficiency and reliability, by adding new automation just plainly engineering problems away. In addition to that, you will establish a reputation of leadership within the team and you will be expected to make decisions impacting larger teams and projects and influence others.

Tasks

  • Troubleshooting of technical issues in the integration of our internal systems with Cloud Providers through their APIs.

  • Improve and maintain our CI/CD pipelines based on Jenkins.

  • Develop and improve our internal tool set.

  • Enhance parts of our core services so that they can be more scalable, reliable and efficient.

  • Contribute to our Git repositories. We use a Git-centric workflow to develop, test and deploy our solutions.

  • Review other changes in the code. We are open to discuss anything so all of us can learn.

  • Collaborate with the team and across other teams to find solutions.

  • Communicate their ideas, discuss and understand other people in English.

Technical skills and experience

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or related field

  • 5+ years of designing, building, and maintaining functionality for highly scalable applications or infrastructure product development in an agile environment. Must be able to demonstrate significant contributions to past projects.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong skills and experience designing and developing scalable systems.

  • Proficient knowledge and proven experience in any Backend programming languages (i.e. Ruby, NodeJS, Python, Java, Go, etc.), as well as related test suites.

  • Strong confidence working and developing within a collaboratively and agile environment.

  • Ability to research problems, make incremental progress when facing technical ambiguities, break issues down to more granular subproblems.

  • Experience with web servers.

  • Strong experience with databases and query optimizations.

  • Experience implementing robust services and APIs.

  • Good knowledge of virtual machines and Cloud images.

  • Experience working on Cloud-based infrastructures, such as AWS, Azure or GCP.

  • Knowledge of Containers, Kubernetes technology, and experience deploying Cloud-native applications.

  • Experience with deployment strategies, reliability, scalability, fault-tolerance of services.

  • Knowledge of security, encryption and credentials handling.
