Los Alamos National Laboratory Design Engineer (Engineer 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Contribute to a dynamic team of facility engineering professionals that provide engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic senior-level engineers with an interest in building systems and infrastructure to work in the Engineering Services – Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) group. This posting is for multiple Design Engineering positions within the following disciplines: Architectural, Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls, Mechanical, Pressure Safety, Welding, Fire Protection, Civil, Structural.

This position will be filled at either the Design Engineer ¾ level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Design Engineer 3 ($101,000 - $168,000)

As a Design Engineer 3, you will be primarily responsible for LANL facility and utility planning, design, and construction. Accordingly, you will participate in scoping, design, analysis, and construction support for all aspects of facility projects. You will develop design drawings, specifications, and test/inspection plans for complex facility projects and mentor junior staff as they learn the design engineering field. You will also be responsible for training junior design engineering staff by providing technical briefings within your discipline.

Design Engineer 4 ($122,200 - $205,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will verify the work of junior staff to ensure compliance with codes, standards, and project scope. You will serve as a subject matter expert within your discipline which including answering technically challenging questions, mentoring and providing training for junior/senior staff, and make updates LANL’s Master Specifications, Engineering Standards, and Standard Drawings as needed.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Develop Contract Documents consisting of drawings and specifications to define changes to buildings and infrastructure.

  • Effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

  • Expert knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment as a member of a multi-discipline team of engineers and designers

  • Expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.

  • Perform work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and applicable Federal, State, and Laboratory codes and standards.

  • Represent the design agency through interface and coordination with other engineering disciplines and the customer’s representative during design and construction.

  • Obtain, evaluate and compare equipment selections from manufacturer’s representatives.

  • Expert knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.

  • Expert knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

  • Mentor junior-level design engineers to perform the requirements described above.

Additional Job Requirements for Design Engineer 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: Independently lead all activities listed under the Design Engineer 3 position; may be assigned independent work or tasks based on the complexity of the task.

Education/Experience at Design Eng 3 level: Bachelor of Science in Engineering with 6 years of relevant experience implementing the requirements described above.

Education/Experience at Design Eng 4 level: Bachelor of Science in Engineering 10- 12 years of relevant experience implementing the requirements described above.

Desired Qualifications:

Professional Engineering License; ability to produce designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
