StampTech Fasteners TM Division Description:

The ITW StampTech Fastener TM Division serves the major OEMs and Tier suppliers in the North American automotive market.  The division supplies stamped metal fasteners and engineered fastener assemblies that leverage our deep-draw stamping technologies. The annual revenue for the division is approximately $160M. Locations include Gallatin, TN, Lexington, KY & Naugatuck, CT.

The position of Tool and Die Maker develops tooling requirements based on production needs and provides component design direction and support for current and potential projects/programs involving complex tolerances. Designs, reviews, tests, and maintains manufacturing processes. Investigates and resolves manufacturing related issues. Develops, constructs, and alters a wide variety of jigs, fixtures, and gauges. As well as the ability to analyze and understand specifications and tolerances; set-up and operate machine tools; study blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and project management and visualize end-product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow all established safety, health and Company policies, procedures, and recognized practices

  • Performs assignments ranging from the use of ordinary tool room operations to work involving accurate relationships and extremely close tolerances

  • Plans construction procedures and methods; including but not limited to; selecting the proper materials, compute dimensions and plan layout, machining, and assembly operations.

  • Identifies and corrects problems in complicated dies and tools

  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances using measuring and inspection devices such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, micrometers and eye loupes

  • Set-up and operate machine tools such as lathe, vertical milling machine, surface and jig grinders, as well as some specialty grinders, to machine parts and tooling to tolerances of within .0002 and verify conformance of machined parts to specifications

  • Heat treats various tool steels to the required hardness specification

  • Examine standard or previously used tools or dies and use proper judgment in evaluating the need for modifications or replacements to be made

  • Calculate all punch and die clearances as well as all tooling dimensions

  • Train apprentice level employees

  • Maintain good housekeeping standards

  • All other duties as assigned by manager

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school education or equivalent or associate degree and/or technical training certification

  • 6+ years of industrial experience

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to use hand and measuring tools in fitting and assembly operations, as well as operate drill press, manual milling machine, lathe, grinders, and other mechanical equipment

  • Experience with operating a forklift

  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

  • Effectively communicate in a professional demeanor when dealing with the public or any level of employees

  • Demonstrate good problem-solving skills and possess communication skills

  • Basic computer skills

  • Ability to work overtime

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee could be exposed to extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

  • Safety toed with slip resistant shoes, safety glasses and earplugs are required on the plant floor
