Performs venipunctures, gives patients instructions in order to properly collect non-blood specimens and performs non-technical and clerical functions related to specimen collection.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED
High School or Equivalent (GED)
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Wisconsin and/or Illinois based on job assignment location.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
Ability to read, write, hear, speak and comprehend the English language.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Collection of blood specimens from various patient types (inpatient, outpatient, nursing home patients and home-bound patients) using defined venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques. Assists nursing staff with blood specimen collection from indwelling lines/catheters. Status recording of the collection date and time in the Laboratory Information System.
Instruction of patients in the collection of non-blood specimens.
Clear communication with patients, physicians and fellow employees.
Receives and records verbal orders from licensed independent practitioners for orders that are specific to the services provided by their department.
Maintenance of the assigned work area, including disinfections and stocking supplies. #cb
