Johnson, VAMC (OGJVAMC), Medical/Surgical Unit. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a very wide range of patient personal care, treatment, and charting activities on a regular and continuing basis on a medical/surgical unit. Major Duties: Assists or provides patients with personal hygiene, i.e., bathing, shaving, teeth brushing, nail care, hair combing, etc. Provides patients with the appropriate level of assistance with activities of daily living, bathing, dressing, transferring, ambulating, feeding, and toileting. Obtains blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and blood glucose (finger stick) and records them appropriately in the medical record. Weighs patients and records them appropriately in the medical record Recognizes life-threatening situations and initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed Participates in nursing care conferences and interdisciplinary team meetings, using good judgment in identifying and reporting patient care concerns, participating in patient care, and discharge planning Assists the physician and/or nurse with procedures, gathering the required items, comforting the patient, monitoring patient physical status, and passing instruments and supplies. Uses the approved method to record and report patient care including obvious physical and/or behavioral changes of patients, vital signs, as well as less obvious changes such as non-verbal cues; e.g., early signs of skin breakdown, slight drooling of the mouth; changes in sensorium in the medical record. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: U.S. Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education or Training: One year above high school with courses related to the nursing assistant occupation. OR Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant. (TRANSCRIPTS OR COPY OF CERTIFICATE REQUIRED) In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must meet the following GRADE REQUIREMENTS: GS-5 LEVEL GRADE REQUIREMENTS Experience: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. OR Education: Successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
