Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #11 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News). JSEG has been a primary contractor for NASA since 1989 and supports marquee NASA programs, including the Space Launch System, International Space Station, space optics fabrication, earth and space sciences and advanced propulsion system development. This opportunity will provide systems engineering and flight safety system support for the definition, documentation, and integration of the Space Launch System (SLS) Flight Safety System (FSS) requirements for all vehicle configurations [Block 1, Block 1B, etc.].
The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with the SLS Elements Offices and their Prime Contractor teams and personnel and the Air Force 45th Space Wing as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, and trade studies.
Systems engineering support that will be provided and performed includes:
Assist the SLS FSS Integration Lead in the update and maintenance of the tailored AFSPCMAN 91-710 requirements with the Air Force 45SW, ESD10114, and their documentation into the SLS Flight Safety Description document, SLSDDD-140.
Define and document verification methods for the SLS FSS tailored requirements by establishing and negotiating the requirement allocation with the responsible organizations.
Negotiate FSS deliverables test documentation, Flight Termination System Report (FTSR), and Range Tracking System Report (RTSR] with the responsible organizations.
Update the FSS Task Matrix as the FSS design matures and then manage and coordinate FSS deliverables of the PFDP, FFDP, FTSR, and RTSR with the SLS Project Elements to ensure products are delivered as scheduled.
Participate in various forums and working groups like Flight Safety System Working Group (FSSWG), Flight Analysis Working Group (FAWG), and Ground Operations Working Group (GOWG) as it relates to FSS by providing flight and range safety inputs and expertise.
Provide expertise to the Configuration Management Boards (CESM, CECB, PRCB) by evaluating Change Evaluation (CE) Sheets and creating presentation charts relative to FSS requirements, risks, and concerns.
Support meetings with the Air Force (45SW) to resolve FSS issues and in meetings with the SLS Elements and Prime Contractors to resolve conflicts.
Additional responsibilities may include leading and/or supporting the following systems engineering tasks:
Development of key system engineering products for program/project milestones.
Identify and communicate risks associated with interface requirements via the NASA Risk Management System.
Assist the SLS FSS Integration Lead by coordinating Equivalent Level of Safety (ELS) changes.
Serve as a Range Safety/FSS Representative in SLS Program and Element design reviews and coordinate updates to the FSS Description Document (SLS-SPEC-140).
Review SLS Prime Contractor FSS component test plans and participate in test plan reviews.
Participate in Block 1B SE&I team meetings, design reviews, etc. to ensure that potential Block 1B vehicle configuration are assessed to determine if they will necessitate subsequent FTS architecture changes.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
A degree in electrical, aerospace, or related engineering field or equivalent technical discipline from an ABET-accredited university is required. Specialized engineering knowledge in launch vehicle Range Safety requirement definition, documentation, and coordination experience is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with minimum of 12 years of experience, a Masters with at least 15 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.
The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of all volumes of AFSPCMAN 91-710, knowledge of NASA flight safety requirements, and the technical expertise to be able to tailor AFSPCMAN 91-710 requirements for NASA programs.
Experience performing RF link analysis as well as expertise in communication and test is desired.
The preferred candidate will have work experience with the 45th Space Wing.
Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive level briefings is desired.
Managed and/or led engineering teams, especially those composed of multiple engineering disciplines
Outstanding negotiation skills demonstrated through complex technical problem solving
Capability to breakdown complex problems or issues into manageable pieces
An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program as well as past NASA Program and Projects, such as
Constellation, and Ares, is highly desired.
Familiarity employing systems engineering processes and concepts for the definition and integration of requirements as
well as adhering to Configuration Management (CM) processes used for the control of requirement data/documents is
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required.
Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook) are required
Prior experience working in a dynamic work environment will serve to prepare a self-directed and effective team player to
assume the role of a Systems Integrator in the Flight System Safety integration effort.

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
