Function Description :

Credit Authorizations is a critical function within the Credit Risk Strategy organization. It is a strategic competitive advantage of American Express as it is the core risk management engine behind our flagship charge card and other payment and lending products.

The position is responsible for managing Credit Risk Authorization strategies for consumer cards across all international markets. The incumbent will lead a team of highly motivated risk professionals to develop, execute, and communicate credit authorization strategies to support profitable business growth initiatives ensuring adherence to Credit policies and procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Building a team of highly skilled and motivated risk management professionals with focus on driving a culture of diversity and inclusion

  • Developing and continuously enhancing Credit Authorization controls and processes for mitigating credit risk exposure

  • Conducting quantitative analysis to decide the thresholds within which consumers can access funds (for example: Is their transaction approved when they swipe their card?)

  • Synchronizing Authorization controls with digital communication strategies, ensuring a positive experience across every customer touchpoint

  • Identifying, evaluating, and integrating new data sources and capabilities into decision-making

  • Analyzing large volumes of data to identify emerging credit trends and find opportunities to enhance risk models

  • Partnering with multiple constituents across the enterprise, specifically regional risk teams and Chief Credit Offices, Compliance and Risk Capabilities, to design and implement enhanced strategies

  • Supporting risk governance, oversight, and audit functions as well as regulatory affairs

  • Maintaining an effective control environment and responding to operational breakdowns with discipline


  • Experience of 7 years in Risk management with people leadership experience of 2 years

  • Demonstrated experience driving and implementing credit risk management strategies

  • Strong analytical acumen, problem solving, project management skills with demonstrated proficiency in managing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Intellectual curiosity and learning agility needed to explore and evaluate new ideas

  • Exceptional professional communication skills – clear, logical, and structured

  • Demonstrated ability to influence at all levels

  • Adaptable interpersonal skills, high energy, and a proven team-first mentality

  • Advanced degree in statistics, econometrics, operations research, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related quantitative field of study
