We are currently seeking a Lead Structural Engineer to join our Engineering Team at our Goderich Mine site in Goderich, Ontario.

The Goderich Mine is located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron on the shores of Goderich, Ontario. It is the largest underground salt mine in the world and has been operating since 1959. This location employs over 500 people and annually produces 6.5 million tons of highway de-icing salt and chemical salt. It is transports product to customers around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway via vessel, rail and roads. The salt is also used to make plastics, detergents, disinfectants, and other important products.

Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1 hour from London & Stratford, Ontario and a 1 ½ hour drive from Kitchener-Waterloo.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position reports to the Engineering and Capital Manager and works closely with operations and maintenance personnel and their engineering peers. The Lead Structural Engineer performs structural assessments of mine and plant infrastructure, evaluates and designs modifications to existing facilities to incorporate process upgrades, and prepares designs for fabrication of various structural components.

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Perform the necessary calculations and designs for various structures such as conveyor transfer towers, crusher and screen supports, material transfer systems (loading pockets, chutes, support towers) and foundations.

  • Evaluate existing steel, concrete and wood structures to determine how various modifications can be made to incorporate new or additional equipment without impacting personnel safety or the structural integrity.

  • Perform assessments of surface and underground infrastructure to determine if repairs or replacement is required. If so, recommend a suitable remediation program.

  • Approve structural/civil designs as required to ensure they comply with pertinent regulations and company standards.

  • Perform project management functions such as cost control, schedule preparation, preparation of tender documents and bid analysis.

  • Oversee work performed by consultants and contractors as required to ensure they are performing their duties as required.

  • Prepare and complete pre-development reviews as required to ensure projects are designed and constructed to comply with pertinent mining regulations and company standards.

  • Provide direction to other engineering personnel, contractors and consultants

  • Provide assistance as required to other engineering personnel (ground control, mechanical engineering, drafting, etc).


You bring to the role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Experience in the underground mining industry and practical knowledge of pertinent mining regulations is an asset.

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD & Microsoft Excel.

  • Working knowledge of mine engineering practices and processes (surveying, ground control, ventilation).

  • Proficient time management and communication skills.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

How often are you here?

  • This is a Monday-Friday position.

  • From time-to-time, this position is expected to work underground.

  • If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate. A relocation package is available to those that qualify.
