Job Description:

The Center for Outdoor Recreation & Education (CORE) is seeking an OPS Program Specialist to assist in managing a comprehensive outdoor recreation program. The outdoor recreation program includes campus wide co-curricular programs, one-day and extended outdoor excursions, outdoor leadership education, trip leader training, wilderness medicine, workshops and continuing education, outdoor equipment rentals, and an outdoor resource library. The successful candidate will facilitate outdoor opportunities and experiences for the University of Florida community.

CORE is the on-campus resource for outdoor recreation. Our services include outdoor recreational trips (backpacking, kayaking, surfing, etc.), outdoor gear rental and educational workshops to encourage every Gator to broaden their experience beyond The Swamp.

Our main focus at Recreational Sports:

  • Work to facilitate the mission of the Department of Recreational Sports within CORE. This includes working in a team environment to provide quality customer service for patrons, training and development for student staff, and organizational structures to maximize efficiency for the program area.

  • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests.

  • Uphold and exceed the expectations of the Cornerstones of RecSports Service: accountability, anticipating needs, attitude, and atmosphere.

  • Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador.

  • Take ownership of RecSports facilities and programs by exhibiting a responsible work ethic

  • Promote and maintain cleanliness and appearance within and surrounding RecSports facilities

  • Enforce RecSports policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction

  • Respond to all emergency situations and adhere to established protocol including pre- and post-incident procedures

Specific duties of this position include:

  • Assist in the day-to-day administrative responsibilities for CORE including: deposits, travel authorization requests, expense reports, e-commerce refunds, trip leader payments and maintaining personnel files.

  • Develop reports to assess gear rental, program sales and participant data.

  • Assist in the management of the CORE trips and workshops program areas, which include: supervising, coaching, mentoring, training and evaluating student staff; inputting and updating trip offerings in the Fusion software program; communicating with and preparing staff and participants as it pertains to trip offerings; and ensuring risk management protocols are practiced.

  • Lead multi-day, international trips or workshops as needed.

  • Assist in the oversight of the Outdoor Leadership Course (OLC) to include: marketing and recruitment of students; developing and facilitating experiential curriculum; serving as a course instructor; and evaluating course competencies.

  • Assist in staff training and continued education in outdoor related technical skills (stand-up-paddleboard, sea kayak, flat water canoe, backpacking, surfing, wilderness medicine, etc.), judgment skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Serve on Department, Division or University committees as requested.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Advertised Salary:

$13.00 hourly

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of appropriate outdoor leadership experience

  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification

  • Current Adult/Child/Infant CPR & AED certification OR register to obtain the certification within

the first week of employment

  • Valid driver license

  • No major moving violations within the past 3 years

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Start Date: May 20th, 2019

  • End Date: May 20th, 2021

  • 2-year commitment with 6-month probationary period

  • Commitment of 30 hours/week

  • The majority of normal work hours will be scheduled between 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday

Work hours will also include non-traditional times (after 5pm and on weekends) for student

staff meetings, outdoor trip programming, on-call duties, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications:

  • ACA (or comparable) Instructor: Level 1 River Canoeing, Level 2 Coastal Kayaking, Level 1 Stand-Up Paddle-boarding

  • Swift Water Rescue

  • AMGA Single Pitch Instructor

  • Leave No Trace Trainer

  • Experience in planning and leading extended and/or international outdoor recreation trips

  • Knowledge of outdoor recreation management operations

  • Knowledge of industry standard risk management practices

  • Knowledge of student development and training theories and concepts

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
