The Senior Director, Health System Performance Improvement will lead the development, implementation, and long-term management of Optum’s Inpatient Clinical Variation team for clients. The Senior Director is responsible for leading, implementation and developing methodology with a team of Optum professionals for both remote and onsite client work and serving as the coordination point across all functions of the clinical variation program including analytics, improvement initiatives, project management, change management, physician alignment, results measurement, executive reporting, and performance sustainability. The Senior Director will partner closely with the client executive clinical and operational leadership to ensure the partnership results are achieved and sustained.

The role of the inpatient clinical variation team is to design, implement and sustain a comprehensive system-wide improvement plan targeting clinical, operational, and financial efficiency opportunities within inpatient care delivery. The priority areas of focus are disease-specific care standards deployed throughout the acute care facilities. The clinical variation team will align Optum care solutions with the client opportunities, continuously driving measureable results in a highly complex environment. Successful performance will be achieved through establishing a consistent, high quality care delivery model that aligns physicians, clinicians, and other key stakeholders, leveraging Optum clinical systems to achieve industry leading outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates strong business development, operational and project leadership skills including developing, leading and implementing systems to hardwire processes, drive accountability, delegate and communicate performance expectations and apply prioritization and proactive problem-solving to ensure achievement of deliverables and outcomes

  • Manage the process to identify, assess and achieve standardized clinical processes and practices for the clinical variation program

  • Leads and actively participates in all aspects of the care variation program, including but not limited to qualitative and quantitative assessment, plan development, implementation activities, and ongoing tracking of results and sustainment

  • Prepares and presents project plans, reports, including descriptions of opportunities, findings, observations, conclusions and recommendations to leadership. Utilizes standard project management methodologies to adhere to expectations

  • Partners with client executives and physician leaders for the overall clinical variation program including establishing strategic priorities and goals, measuring results, identifying and removing barriers to success, and monitoring sustainability to ensure consistent performance

  • Creates a trusted partner relationship with client executives and is seen as a partner in the successful design and implementation of the care variation program

  • Leads multiple clinical improvement projects. Keeps the performance improvement team on track with timelines and expected results. Manage results and timelines based on workgroup charters and strategy maps

  • Performs analyses of compliance and/or variability across clients on the operating processes and procedures

  • Develops and delivers clear and concise updates to senior leadership at the client site and within Optum

  • Monitors progress toward savings results, key milestones and service level agreements, and provides regular updates and escalates (as appropriate) to internal and external key stakeholders

  • Monitors program budget and return on investment progress to ensure meeting contractual agreement

  • Presents to large groups well and has the ability to adjust message to audience (CEO, CMO, CFO and other system clinical leaders)

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience

  • 7+ years of clinical variation reduction in a hospital setting and/or consulting experience in clinical variation

  • History of driving initiatives and achieving performance, financial and budget goals across complex organizations

  • Ability to work in a highly matrix organization

  • Demonstrated self-starter with strong planning organization, analytical and problem solving skills

  • Proven track record of building and influencing relationships with external and internal executives and stakeholders, as well as leading, influencing and managing a large matrix workforce

  • Strong presentation, written and verbal communication skills, including well-developed interpersonal skills

  • Travel up to 80% for client or internal meetings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Business Administration; Master of Health Administration

  • Experience in hospital operations or care management and/or leading complex clinical transformation consulting engagements resulting in significant recurring financial benefit

  • Experience developing clinical transformation methodologies and designing innovative solutions in a complex and rapidly changing environment, including achievement of financial savings

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $130,300 to $250,200.
