Overview:

The Operations Research (OR) group within the Refining organization enhances and supports the planning, optimization, simulation, and scheduling software applications used by the refineries and other engineering groups within the Company - not only to run the day-to-day business, but also to develop the Company's long-term asset investment strategy.

This successful candidate is responsible for developing decision support tools to optimize the supply chain. The primary focus is the integrated scheduling and blending optimization platforms used at the refineries but can also include secondary distribution networks such as pipelines, terminals, and docks outside of the refinery fence line. Opportunities will also exist for consulting with other business units within MPC to aid in the development of optimized solutions to drive profitability.

Responsibilities:

Builds, maintains, and enhances refinery decision support tools for scheduling and blending optimization. Establishes and oversees local refinery teams as needed to coordinate updates and changes to the tools. Strategizes new approaches and improvements to scheduling and blending tools across refinery locations and leads these projects from definition through full implementation. Interfaces with IT organization on development or enhancement of supporting tools. Builds, maintains, and uses reports and interfaces to lead to continuous improvement of decision support tools. Also develops and supports tools for reconciling, biasing, and auditing the scheduling and blending optimization solutions against actual performance. Consults with other MPC organizations when modeling and/or optimization support and expertise is needed. Provides technical support, consulting, and training to Refinery Value Chain Optimization staff and helps to improve the planning, scheduling, and optimization work flow. Interfaces with software supplier on recommended enhancements and bug/fix items.

Qualifications:

Degree: Bachelor’s Degree required.

Major: Chemical Engineering (preferred) or Computer Science

Computer proficiencies: Strong computer proficiency including Microsoft Office products, Outlook, and ability to successfully use additional refining-specific software applications. Strong Excel skills and some VBA programming experience. Prior experience with AspenTech APS (ORION), MBO, and PIMS software is a plus. Prior experience with gasoline blending is also a plus.

Work Experience: General knowledge of refinery flow sheet and process unit functions. Understanding of Refinery Value Chain Optimization workflow. Prior experience working in Products Control is a plus. The ability to work with minimal supervision, and with a results-oriented focus.

Travel required: 10%
