Laboratory Manager

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for managing Laboratory Services by leading, planning and developing, and organizing the strategic and operational aspects of the department, ensuring the effective delivery of top quality health care and service to TEC’s patients. Contributes to the successful operation of the department by establishing priorities, removing obstacles, resolving problems, managing performance metrics, and identifying and recommending process improvements. Directly supervises, mentors, develops and evaluates both the Laboratory Services Supervisors and Client Services/CLPR. Monitors department performance for compliance with accreditation, legal and other regulatory requirements. Acts as liaison between Administration, physicians, staff, employer representatives, and patients.

  • Direct work of staff, including supervision, hiring, and terminations; determine staffing needs, and ensure efficient utilization of staff.

  • Conduct and document annual performance evaluations.

  • Responsible for scheduling; including timecard and PTO management in PeopleNet, and assure appropriate staffing coverage during weekdays, weekends and holidays.

  • Monitor skill development of staff and provides mentoring as necessary to ensure proper work practices.

  • Investigate and respond to patient and departmental concerns. Responsible for tracking and resolving Culture of Excellence incidents.


  • Develops, recommends, and administers departmental policies and procedures consistent with the provision of high-quality laboratory standards and performance and in accordance with CAP standards

  • Monitor Laboratory Services staff Continuing Educational Program requirements.

  • Manage Laboratory Services purchasing needs and inventory of departmental supplies, including evaluations of new products.

  • Manage maintenance of equipment with Biomed Services.

  • Monitor Competency Program and adherence to safety guidelines, and TEC laboratory and state guidelines including Corporate Compliance regulations.

  • Act as liaison between Laboratory Director and Laboratory Services staff.

  • Incorporate Lean Concepts into new Lab designs

  • Completes annual compliance training on HIPAA/Privacy/Confidentiality/Non-Discrimination/Harassment/Integrity Statement and signs Agreements.

  • Ensures confidentiality of patient information following HIPAA guidelines and TEC policies.

  • Attends training to meet requirements of the job position and as needed or mandated by TEC policies, Div. of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH), OSHA, L&I and other state/federal regulations.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Note that these requirements are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform this job.

Knowledge: A comprehensive understanding of lab test ordering is necessary. Working knowledge of organization policies, procedures, and systems. Knowledge of managerial practices and principles.

Skills: Must have good professional communications and interpersonal skills. Requires strong organizational skills to set priorities and ability to work with high degree of accuracy and attention to details while responding to tight deadlines and multiple priorities and demands. Proficient skill in Word, Excel and lab computer applications. Exceptional organizational skills and ability to prioritize.

Education : BS in Medical Technology or other Applied Sciences. MBA preferred

Experience : Minimum of 6 years Medical Technology clinical lab experience.

3 years Supervisory experience.
