The Assistant Director of Communications will serve as the primary contact for women’s basketball and other assigned sport. The primary responsibility of this position is to support assigned programs in strategic communications to positively impact and elevate the Oregon brand. This position will also develop and execute a long-term vision for the communications function within assigned programs.
This role will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the women’s basketball and other assigned sports social media channels while populating GoDucks.com with features and releases. Other duties include designing media guides, compiling statistics, arranging media interviews and traveling to select away events, etc. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
This position is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program, including adherence to all department policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, Pac-12 Conference, and the NCAA.
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Two years of experience in a collegiate communications/media relations/public relations/sports information environment, which should have included the following:
o Experience in writing game stories and game notes along with editing and designing media guides and game programs.
o Experience in Associated Press-style writing skills and proficiency in layout and design software (Photoshop and InDesign).
o Experience serving the needs of diverse populations.
• Excellent written, oral, and editing skills.
• Ability to exercise creative and innovative thinking and have a firm pulse on audience demographic.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
• Exceptional ability to work in a networked way, emphasizing collaboration in a complex environment.
• Ability to perform detail-oriented work accurately and to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
• Clear understanding of NCAA rules and compliance.
• Ability to ask difficult questions, often in an emotionally charged situation.
• Thorough knowledge of all sports UO sponsors, including an understanding of the role of local and national media in assisting efforts in promoting our nationally recognized teams.
• Master's degree in communications, marketing, or related field.
• Experience working with basketball.
• Familiarity with statistical software (Genius & Automated Scorebook).
• NCAA Championships experience.
• Previous athletic communications experience within a Power 5 conference.
