Position Summary

This position involves working directly with the GLBRC Science Director and lab personnel, which requires a highly motivated individual capable of independently rendering decisions. Coordinates and initiates a wide range of clerical activities in order to support Science Director and lab members to facilitate the functioning of the lab. Specifically, arrange travel and documents for reimbursement. Manage social media (Facebook, Twitter and Lab Website) and coordinate lab events. Manage computer, printer, and software needs. Communicate publications, lab updates, awards, and personnel changes to department. Schedules and coordinates meetings, interviews, reserving rooms or spaces for Science Director and lab members. This position will also support basic research needs, disinfect lab common touch points, dispose of biohazardous waste, assists with maintaining lab stocks, supplies, equipment, documentation, and storage of research materials. Generates MTA’s, USDA APHIS Permits, notifications and manage documentation and track such materials. Conduct all required lab/building trainings for employees such as Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), Site Specific, and other Environmental Health and Safety training. Update/complete lab biological material registration including recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecule projects at MSU. The initial appointment is limited term position, with possible extensions contingent upon funding availability and project need.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired through a high school education with coursework in typing and shorthand; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, calendaring and/or presentation software; typing and filing; and may require knowledge of technical or scientific terminology in the field of plant biology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Essential qualifications include careful attention to detail and accurate record keeping. Knowledge normally acquired from specialized training such as that acquired in one year of college, technical, vocational, or trade school; six months of experience in a laboratory setting or office; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional desired skills and knowledge includes a Bachelor's degree in plant biology or a related discipline; experience in a molecular laboratory; high level of organization and writing skills, computer literacy; and strong interpersonal skills.
