Nationwide Children's Hospital Release of Information Specialist in Columbus, Ohio

Contingent, Non-benefits eligible.

We are seeking a Release of Information Specialist:

This position is responsible for the comprehensive processing of requests for medical information to include customer service for walk-ins, opening and processing incoming mail, verifying authorizations, faxing, pulling medical records, preparing letters of response, and appearing in court as needed.

  • Responsible for protecting patient privacy and confidentiality and all operations.

  • Responds to verbal and written requests for information; verifies validity of each authorization.

  • Works closely with HealthPort to ensure the highest quality and achieving the turnaround time standard of 5-7 business days.

  • Comfortable with receiving inbound calls and placing outbound calls related to request for release of information.

  • Provides direct customer service to walk-in requests for information.

  • Takes personal responsibility for insuring exceptional customer service both in house and externally.

  • Faxes information to requestors in emergency situations

  • Completes form letters to accompany invalid medical record requests returned to requestors.

  • Testifies to the authenticity of the medical information and hand-delivers medical records to court as needed.

  • Serves as a direct link to the hospital’s legal services department to facilitate the processing of records needed for legal purposes.

  • Locates and retrieves archived charts, microfiche and film, clinic charts, and any additional information from several different computer systems.

  • Covers the front window for the receptionist during breaks and lunch

  • Demonstrates flexibility related to correspondence requests and works with customers outside of normal parameters when needed.

  • Identifies process problems in daily workflow and takes the initiative to solve them.

  • Promotes the Electronic Medical Record and it’s functionality through ongoing house-wide networking and advocacy efforts.

  • Promotes MyChart activation and use to patients, parents, and guardians as appropriate.

  • Assists in Release of Information education development for student clinical experiences, as well as new employees.

Assists with stat transmission of patient information in response to emergency requests.

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Current certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.

• Minimum High School graduate or equivalent required.

• Minimum 2 years’ experience in hospital setting preferred (medical record experience preferred).

• Knowledge of HIPAA and government regulations regarding confidentiality and release of information preferred.

• Knowledge of Streamline Health Imaging system and Epic HIM systems preferred

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint)

• Critical thinking and problem solving skills required

• Ability to handle multiple tasks, priorities and deadlines

• Analytical and organizational skill required

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills required.

• Excellent customer service skills required. Excellent customer service skills with ability to deal with patients, families, attorneys, physicians, employees, and other hospital staff with tact and diplomacy.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to see, hear, speak, read, and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation and care for oneself, with little or no difficulty. Performance of principal duties and responsibilities may require the ability to travel.
