Work Schedule: 8 Hr (8:00:00 AM - 6:00:00 PM)

Summary:

General Summary: The Registered Pharmacist – per diem, under the direction of the Pharmacy Unit Manager performs professional functions generally associated with the practice of pharmacy in the retail setting for the retail pharmacy. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Interprets and validates prescriptions in regard to such attributes as legibility and authenticity.

  2. Checks patient profile for pertinent medication information before dispensing medication.

  3. Evaluates dosage regimen for appropriateness of dosage, interval, formulation, and duration of therapy.

  4. Evaluates refill status of prescription; may determine refill abuse or non-compliance.

  5. Fills and checks prescription order in a timely manner.

  6. Analyzes and resolves problems on an ongoing basis in such areas as availability of drugs and designing compounding procedures to maintain effective pharmacy operation.

  7. Participates in and is familiar with the procedures involved with the procurement, inventory control, record maintenance and distribution of investigational drugs.

  8. Makes recommendations to physicians or other health care professionals regarding patient-specific drug therapy.

  9. Responds to drug information inquiries from physicians, nurses, and other health care practitioners.

  10. Reviews drug-related information pertinent to drug therapy, such as cost, bio-availability and common adverse effects.

  11. Consults with patient to properly identify symptoms in order to advise patient about self-medication.

  12. Educates and counsels patients in the proper use of their medications.

  13. Anticipates customers’ needs and makes decisions that are timely, cost-conscious and clinically appropriate.

  14. Assumes leadership roles voluntarily.

  15. Provides general supervision for technical support in their assigned operational areas.

  16. Monitors and coordinates workflow.

  17. Assists in the orientation and training of new employees, pharmacists, and technicians and serves as a preceptor to students, exposing them to all aspects of professional pharmacy practices.

  18. Participates in the implementation of electronic data processing systems for use in the pharmacy (e.g. patient records, inventory control, drug utilization, billing procedures, etc.).

  19. Participates in the implementation and maintenance of the departmental pharmacy technician development program.

  20. Participates in departmental Quality Assurance and TQM activities.

  21. Attends department meetings as scheduled.

  22. Remains current in the professional and clinical literature of the profession.

  23. Performs within the framework of the RUMC/HDM, L.L.C. policies and procedures.

  24. Performs other tasks or special projects as assigned by management.

Other information:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy (desired).

  2. Currently licensed as a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Illinois.

  3. Minimum of one year hospital pharmacy experience and two years retail pharmacy experience is desired.

  4. Capable of assuming responsibility for evaluating and monitoring drug therapy relative to the total needs/problems of the ambulatory care patient in collaboration with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

  5. Must be able to work effectively with others to provide safe and effective drug therapy.

  6. Good problem solving skills and the ability to work independently and quickly in responding to and resolving a wide range of problems.

  7. Flexibility with work schedule.

  8. Participation and membership in professional societies and organizations is desirable.

  9. Excellent verbal and communication skills.

  10. Dependable in attendance and job performance.

  11. Good organizational and time-management skills.

  12. Team player with a positive attitude and work ethic.

Equipment/Machines/Vehicles, etc. Used in Performing Work:

  1. Telephone, computer systems, laminar air flow hoods, copiers, fax machines, calculator and other office equipment as necessary.

Working Conditions:

  1. Normal office, warehouse and clinical environments.

  2. May be exposed to certain hazardous materials, including but not limited to blood-borne pathogens, chemotherapeutic agents, cleaning and sanitizing agents.
