As a member of the Kemper Corporate Legal Department in our Chicago headquarters, this attorney will be responsible for providing practical, strategic, and high-quality legal advice and counsel on privacy, data security and data governance matters across the Company. This includes collaborating and coordinating with key internal stakeholders to advise on applicable privacy and data protection laws, regulations and guidelines affecting the Company’s business.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Advising on best practices and compliance with privacy and data protection laws, as well as overseeing legal and regulatory aspects of data collection and use, privacy disclosures and transparency, and related issues

  • Monitor developing laws, regulations, and best practices regarding use of data and related technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive modeling, and intelligent algorithms in the insurance industry

  • Providing legal support and advice to business partners as they innovate products, develop customer solutions, and discover new ways to operate utilizing technology and data

  • Advising on potential liability and other legal aspects related to data privacy and data security incidents and supporting the Company's cybersecurity incident response programs

  • Providing legal support for the strategic reviewing and negotiating of privacy and data security terms in contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing agreements and data transfer agreements

  • Supporting the development and delivery of privacy tools, policies and training to equip employees to handle personal data appropriately and in compliance with Company policies, practices and procedures

  • Conduct privacy and security risk assessments across enterprise, identifying key risks and mitigation strategies and working with key business owners to develop and implement controls

  • Providing updates to senior management and other business partners on changes in legal developments affecting the insurance industry in the areas of data protection, security, data governance and privacy


  • JD degree and licensed to practice law in Illinois or with ability to obtain Illinois in-house law license

  • 6-10 years of legal experience at large law firm or as in-house counsel

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state and other applicable laws and regulations regarding privacy and data security

  • Insurance industry experience preferred

  • Able to work independently and collaborate with colleagues across the organization

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Comfortable in fast-paced environment and adapting to changing priorities and technologies

  • Creative problem-solving ability with a focus on achieving business solutions while managing company risk

  • Highly-driven and self-motivated
