University of Virginia Research Computing Scientist in Charlottesville, Virginia

UVA Research Computing (RC) is seeking two Research Computing Scientists with AI/ML/DL experience to join its new Data Analytics Center (DAC).

RC strives to create innovative computational and data analysis solutions for researchers. We build and maintain the University's high performance computing platforms while educating the next generation of researchers on the power of advanced computing. The new Data Analytics Center is providing domain expertise for researchers who are using advanced computational methods in their research.

As a member of the RC team, you will further our organization’s mission by implementing AI/ML/DL techniques or other statistical analyses for research projects, collaborating with RC team members to ensure best practices for running the analyses on the high-performance computing (HPC) environment, and participating in interest group meetings to explore new computational techniques in AI/ML/DL.

As an ideal candidate, you have experience with applying AI/ML/DL or other statistical techniques to big data, knowledge of academic computing, and are able to apply those skills to UVA’s research computing environment. We seek a quick learner who enjoys technical problem-solving, and working on multiple projects simultaneously.

These are hybrid roles, requiring an in-office presence every other week.

These positions have committed funding through June 2028, with the expectation of continued institutional support for the positions beyond that point.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze researchers’ data and computational requirements to determine a plan for developing a solution.

  • Develop and apply novel data analytic tools to support academic research using central computing systems, including the University’s high-performance computing environment.

  • Explore emerging techniques in AI/ML/DL and make recommendations for the installation of associated software applications on UVA’s central computing systems.

  • Develop documentation or training tools to share knowledge among team members and researchers.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in engineering, mathematics, data analytics, natural or social science, data science or research experience in related area is preferred.

  • Two or more years of experience with at least one programming language such as Python, R, Matlab, C/C++, Fortran.

  • Experience with high-performance computing and basic shell scripting.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to be a team player.

  • Teaching or user training experience in any computational research domain is a plus.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, data analytics, natural or social science, or a related area, and at least seven years of experience with implementing Machine Learning/Deep Learning frameworks or other statistical analyses.

  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks, Recurrent Neural Networks, Large Language Models, or Autoencoders.

  • At least one year of experience working at the command line in a Linux environment.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. US citizenship or permanent residency is required to work with high-security data environments.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
