Summary:

The Chief Operating Officer oversees the day-to-day operations of UNC Health and drives its growth strategy. The Chief Operating Office leads a clinical structure to support UNC Health’s mission to care for the people of North Carolina and beyond. This position will work closely with the CEO, senior leaders, and cross-functional teams to develop and execute plans for operational excellence, financial performance, and organizational growth. This includes implementing processes and systems to improve efficiency and scalability, identifying opportunities for expansion and new market entry, and driving innovation to stay ahead of industry trends. This leader develops and implements system-level clinical operations, balancing cost and managing population and regional care needs to provide high-quality, comprehensive patient care and a positive patient / consumer experience. The Chief Operating Officer promotes the long-term financial viability of system clinical operations through the delivery of a cost-effective, integrated care.

Responsibilities:

Strategic

  • Develop and execute the organization's growth strategy, including identifying new market opportunities, evaluating potential partnerships and acquisitions, and driving innovation to stay ahead of industry trends.

  • Delivers system-wide clinical operations to achieve UNC Health’s strategic goals and deliver best-in-class care.

  • Works with the Chief Clinical Officer and Executive Dean to align clinical, operational, and academic missions. • Oversees a clinical operations strategy to drive consistent quality & safety, while meeting local market needs.

  • Oversees development and implementation of clinical support services strategy to improve care coordination and patient / consumer experience.

  • Determines clinical operations and financial structures for each market, considering unique Triangle and State operational / financial needs, to provide cost-effective, high-quality care.

  • Anticipates healthcare and regional market changes and adjusts clinical business models as needed

  • Oversees P&Ls of different regions, maintaining a portfolio mindset while aligning behaviors to benefit the system.

  • Integrates clinics, outpatient & post-acute services across the system to increase quality of care and patient / consumer retention.

  • Defines system-wide clinical operations performance metrics (financial, operational, patient / consumer experience, etc.) to integrate care delivery.

  • Supports due diligence aspects of network development.

Operational

  • Partners with UNC Health leadership team to deliver on major capital projects and to drive alignment between the entity clinical leaders and system shared services and non-clinical support services.

  • Establishes long-term financial goals with the Chief Financial Officer to compete on affordability, optimize revenue, and reduce operational costs.

  • Determines financial budget, P&L, resource allocation, and metrics for all clinical operations (i.e., inpatient, outpatient & post-acute facilities, clinics, and nursing operations).

  • Holds non-physician, clinical leaders accountable for standards of quality & safety.

  • Supports the transaction, execution and integration of network development activities.

  • Oversees the development and management of clinical operations policies and procedures (e.g., hours of operation, staff ratios, etc.) in collaboration with the Chief Clinical Officer.

People Leadership

  • Serves as a key leader for system-wide clinical integration and enables operational L3 leaders to coordinate strategic culture goals and initiatives.

  • Has a dyad reporting relationship with the Chief Clinical Officer.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • Master's degree in an appropriate discipline.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Requires 12 years of progressively responsible experience, including 10 years of management experience.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

  • Strong and proven strategic thinking and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the development of trusting relationships and partnerships.

  • Proven ability to execute complex organizational change.

  • Excellent project management and negotiating skills. Understands and applies knowledge of the healthcare space along with applicable regulations and policies.
